District 6440 Histories 2005<br />

was assumed by Crippled Children’s Clinic.<br />

1921 - Initiated program of community activity with underprivileged children. This program led to<br />

establishment of Big Brother and Big Sister Assoc. in 1935.<br />

1939 - Grade school band program established by <strong>Rotarians</strong> and Rotary Anns with musical instruments<br />

and uniforms provided.<br />

1942-46 - Contributed generously time and money to assist USO and Servicemen’s Center in<br />

Waukegan.<br />

1948 - Started two Jr. Achievement programs in Waukegan, which still continue to be a major project of<br />

the club.<br />

1950-55 - Annual Christmas parties provided for children of Lake Bluff orphanage.<br />

1953 - Collected funds and clothing, sending 40 boxes of clothing to Korean orphans.<br />

1969-73 - Annual Gourmet dinners prepared and served to raise funds for Club’s youth projects: Happy<br />

Day Nursery, high school band, Jr. Achievement, Half-Way House, and Opportunity New Tomorrow.<br />

1973 - Initiated the practice of assessing members $25 per year to continue funding numerous youth<br />

projects. Assisted in raising funds to erect new building for Happy Day Nursery. One classroom was<br />

dedicated to Waukegan Rotary in recognition of generous support over the years.<br />

1974 - Took leadership in Salvation Army campaign to raise funds for new service center in Waukegan.<br />

Have continued to man kettles and collect funds to help Salvation Army.<br />

1976-77 - Annual ice cream socials held to initiate new community service projects.<br />

1978-79 – Purchased lighted stop signs for all school crossing guards in Waukegan. Instituted annual<br />

event, Waukegan Rotary Community School raised $7,000 for charity.<br />

1979-80 - Dropped practice of assessing members $25 each year for funding of projects. Vocational<br />

schools scholarships for students to the College of Lake County. Camp scholarships for YMCA camp.<br />

Leadership to Jr. Achievement divisional structure new in 1979. Leadership given to renovation of<br />

YMCA.<br />

1980-81 - Hosted four families from France during Rotary International Convention. Provided<br />

leadership to many organizations: Jr. Achievement, Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, YMCA, and Shimer<br />

College. Manned Salvation Army kettles. Provided funds for replacement cabin at YMCA camp.<br />

Supported Waukegan Park District soccer program.<br />

1981-82 - Held 5th annual community Christmas concert, raising funds for local charities and providing<br />

a community service. Manned Salvation Army kettles. Began free bus pickup for seniors to attend<br />

Christmas concert.<br />

1982-83 - 6th annual Christmas concert raising funds for charity. Manned Salvation Army kettles.<br />

Instituted recognition luncheons for three classes of student achievers: student body leader, academic<br />

achievers, and athletic achievers from four area high schools.<br />

1988 - Has continued with various fundraisers and gave birth to new Rotary Breakfast club in the same<br />
