District 6440 Histories 2005<br />
Carolina Tornado Relief efforts as well as Plainfield Tornado Relief. Contributed substantially to the<br />
Katrina Relief fund and donated $1,200 dollars to a local family for losses in a house fire. Gave to A<br />
Safe Place annually as well as donating gifts to the Winchester House, Waukegan Developmental Center<br />
and to International Students at Trinity International University. Also, worked to support the Deerfield<br />
Food Pantry. Gave Annual donation to the Rotary Rose Bowl parade float.<br />
Top three in the district for all-time giving total to Rotary International at $262,000. Involved with the<br />
Ambassadorial Scholars, The Group Study, Humanitarian, and Polio Eradication Programs. Continued<br />
support of the Irish Children’s Fund and Funded water wells in India. Assisted the Cambodian Relief<br />
efforts as well as sent Kidney filters to Brazil and sent member Vic Carnelli to perform volunteer dental<br />
work in Ecuador.<br />
Youth Exchange Activity:<br />
1989-90 - Hosted Exchange Student Alfredo Monterrudio from Mexico.<br />
1990- Sent Student to Quito, Ecuador.<br />
1992-93- Sent student to Royal College of Art in London.<br />
1993-94 Sent student to Seville Spain.<br />

Rotary Club of Des Plaines Chartered May 12, 1951<br />
1976 - Completed three-year $15,000 pledge for equipment and supplies for Des Plaines Paramedics.<br />
Contributions: $2,000 to new Senior Citizen Drop In Center for use as TV room; $1,000 scholarship for<br />
high school student to attend college; $200 to $400 to Christmas and Thanksgiving food baskets to<br />
needy families; $40 Project Big (high school vocational guidance program); $400 Nurses Lending<br />
Closet; $150 little league baseball; $100 Des Plaines Community Chest.<br />
1977 - Developing and furnishing $10,000 reading, conference, tutorial facility at Maine Township High<br />
School West; four $500 scholarships to high school students. Contributions: $400 in Thanksgiving and<br />
Christmas food baskets for needy families; $40 to Project Big; $300 Nurses Lending Closet; $150 little<br />
league baseball; $100 Des Plaines Crusade of Mercy.<br />
1978 - Cadillac Draw annual fundraiser for community projects. Assisted Des Plaines Historical Soc. on<br />
completion of their building, $8,000.<br />
1979 - Cadillac Dinner $15,000, $120 holiday food baskets for needy families; $100 Project Big; $100<br />
A.F.S. high school youth exchange; $2,000 in scholarships for college; $175 Des Plaines Senior Citizen<br />
Center; $540 Mobile Crime Prevention display; $225 West Park little league; $500 wheelchair for high<br />
school student; $8,000 to restore Kinders Historical Home. Honored 15 Eagle Boy Scouts during Youth<br />
Appreciation Week.<br />
1980 - Support of Nang refugee family from Laos, time and $3,500; support of City of Des Plaines<br />
holiday food basket program for needy; $1,000 college scholarship program; support of local high<br />
school career night, support of local little league team, support to American Field Service; and support<br />
for Des Plaines Citizens’ Center.<br />
