District 6440 Histories 2005
We first polled members to learn whether the membership wished to continue the Club's existence. The
response was strongly in favor of continuing. Then we began disbursing our accumulated charitable
funds. We geared up our morale and made certain that the projects we undertook bore an unmistakable
Rotary identity.
We hosted our annual Charter Anniversary/Thanksgiving luncheon for senior citizens. The Highland
Park Strings donated an afternoon of music and entertainment. A delectable array of extra Thanksgiving
dinners went to a homeless shelter in Lincoln Park, a gift from our valiant but tiny club. We kept in
touch with members of the local press and were rewarded with photo coverage of several events.
Our members opened their hearts and their wallets to District 6440's Katrina Relief Fund.
The Club purchased and distributed a stand-alone photo printer to a local day care center for low-income
families and also presented them with a mitten bin of 50 pairs of mittens.
A local police officer received our scholarship to continue his post-graduate education in arson
investigation science. Additionally we awarded scholarships to four outstanding young students enabling
them to attend college.
Our Club teamed with the Wilmettte Harbour Club to weigh in for the Fabretto Foundation project in
Managua, Nicaragua, supplying funds for equipment needed to educate street youths there as computer
experts.
Our Rotarians collected personal-sized toiletries, books and bags of candies and a member distributed
them to VA Hospital long-term patients.
We ended the Rotary year as we celebrated a new president and new enthusiasm with both walkers and
riders in a decorated vintage convertible in the Highland Park Independence Day Parade.
