District 6440 Histories 2005<br />

During 2000 and 2001, the Western Pacific<br />

region, including People’s Republic of China, was<br />

declared polio-free. The number of polio cases<br />

declined 99 percent since the <strong>Global</strong> Polio<br />

Eradication Initiative began in 1988. An emphasis<br />

was placed on treating avoidable blindness. The<br />

first awards were made from the Scholarships<br />

fund pool for Low-Income Countries.<br />

Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund<br />

totaled $61.1 million. The Permanent Fund<br />

reached $122.6 million. 1,084 Ambassadorial<br />

Scholars from 67 countries studied in 70<br />

countries.<br />

In 2002, the European region was declared poliofree.<br />

An emphasis on membership growth added<br />

54,939 members, the highest one-year increase<br />

ever. Rotary welcomed the United Arab Emirates,<br />

with readmission of the Rotary Club of Dubai.<br />

More than 1,100 Rotary clubs were chartered.<br />

The Rotary Foundation received the 2002 Gates<br />

Award for <strong>Global</strong> Health from Bill & Melinda<br />

Gates Foundation. Contributions to the Annual<br />

Programs Fund totaled $67.5 million. The<br />

Permanent Fund was $91 million.<br />

In 2003, <strong>Rotarians</strong> raised $119 million for the<br />

one-year polio eradication fundraising campaign<br />

to help fill the vaccine funding gap and support<br />

polio surveillance. The first class of the Rotary<br />

world Peace Scholars began studies at the Rotary<br />

Centers for International Studies in peace and<br />

conflict resolution. The Foundation streamlined<br />

its Humanitarian Grants structure. Contribution to<br />

the Annual Program Fund totaled $55.8 million<br />

while the Permanent Fund reached $113.1<br />

million.<br />

During 2004 and 2005, an emphasis was placed<br />

on poverty alleviation, health concerns, literacy<br />

and education and promoting the family of<br />

Rotary. More than 800 <strong>Rotarians</strong>, Rotoractors and<br />

guest attended Rotary/UN Day at UN<br />

Headquarters in New York. The Rotary<br />

Centennial history book, A Century of Service:<br />

The story of Rotary International, was introduced<br />

at the International Assembly. Fifteen one-day<br />

Presidential Celebrations were scheduled in<br />

various parts of the World.<br />

In 2005, Rotary celebrated its centennial on<br />

February 23.<br />
