Structure—A bridge, retaining wall or tunnel.<br />
Traffic Calming—Measures intended to slow or reduce motor-vehicle traffic in order to improve<br />
safety for pedestrians <strong>and</strong> bicyclists <strong>and</strong> improve the environment for residents.<br />
Traffic Control Devices—Signs, signals or other fixtures, whether permanent or temporary, placed<br />
on or adjacent to a travel-way by any authority of a public body having jurisdiction to regulate, warn<br />
or guide traffic.<br />
Traffic Volume—The given number of vehicles that pass a given point for a given amount of time<br />
(hour, day, year). See ADT.<br />
Transit Mall—A street, or set of streets, in a city or town along which automobile traffic is<br />
prohibited or greatly restricted <strong>and</strong> only public transit vehicles, bicycles <strong>and</strong> pedestrians are<br />
permitted.<br />
TSP— Transportation System <strong>Plan</strong>: The overall plan for all transportation modes for a given area<br />
(usually city, county or MPO).<br />
UGB—Urban Growth Boundary: the area surrounding an incorporated city in which the city may<br />
legally exp<strong>and</strong> its city limits.<br />
Ultrasonic Detector—A detector that senses the presence or passage of vehicles through its field<br />
of emitted ultrasonic energy.<br />
Urban Area—The area immediately surrounding an incorporated city or rural community that is<br />
urban in character, regardless of size.<br />
Utility Cyclist—An individual(s) who uses a bicycle primarily to reach a particular destination to<br />
purchase or deliver goods <strong>and</strong> services. Messengers are classified as utility cyclists.<br />
Vehicle—Any device in, upon or by which any person or property is or may be transported or<br />
drawn upon a highway, including vehicles that are self-propelled or powered by any means.<br />
Video Detection— The use of video sensors to monitor <strong>and</strong> detect activity<br />
Walkway—A transportation facility built for use by pedestrians, including persons in wheelchairs.<br />
Walkways include sidewalks, paths <strong>and</strong> paved shoulders.<br />
Warning Signs—A yellow bicycle crossing sign (W11-1) as established in the National Manual on<br />
Uniform Traffic Control Devices is the st<strong>and</strong>ard sign for use in advance of a point where an<br />
officially designated bike path or bike trail crosses a roadway.<br />
Wide Outside Lane—A wider than normal curbside travel lane that is provided for ease of bicycle<br />
operation where there is insufficient room for a bike lane or shoulder bikeway.<br />
