I’m looking forward to seeing all of
you March 17-21 st at the SCA 38 th
Annual Meeting in Riverside. The
Annual Meeting is the Society’s
principal event and a time for all
members to reacquaint themselves
with friends, share their research, learn
of new projects and studies, and honor
those who have made a lasting
contribution to our profession. Mike
Lerch, Program and Local
Arrangement Chairperson, has
diligently crafted an impressive
program of some 15 organized
symposia and more than 120 papers,
informative workshops, and a host of
social events for all to enjoy.
Highlights of the Annual Meeting
include Thursday’s plenary session on
DNA Contributions to Archaeology
and the all-day Saturday session
commemorating the 20th anniversary
of major contributions to California
archaeology by Michael Moratto and
Joseph and Kerry Chartkoff. The
Saturday session will be open to the
public and will conclude with a
reception where SCA members and
the public may visit with the original
authors and current speakers. Thursday
evening, the Silent Auction will be
held in nearby Redlands at the offices
and courtyard of Statistical Research,
located in a restored 1890 brick
warehouse in the Santa Fe Depot
National Register District. The Friday
night Awards Banquet will feature
keynote speaker Dr. John Rick, who
will present a program on his research
at Chavín de Huántar, Peru. Don’t
miss out on all the great papers,
events, and socializing with your
friends.
The long-awaited Volume 14 of the
Proceedings has been delivered to the
printer, and we anticipate its
distribution at the Annual Meeting,
along with Volume 17, the
compendium of last year’s Annual
Meeting Papers. Just two more reasons
why you should make sure you come
to Riverside.
The Committee for Advanced
Annual Meeting Planning (CAAMP),
spearheaded by Tom Origer, has been
hard at work securing hotels for future
meetings. Through their efforts, the
2005 Annual Meeting will be held at
the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento and
the 2006 Annual Meeting at the
Marriott in Ventura. Potential sites are
being considered for the 2007 and
2008 Annual Meetings, and given the
high energy of the CAAMP members,
I’m sure it won’t be long until you see
final venues being reported.
By now, many of you have visited
the SCA’s new website and have found
its content and layout much improved
over its predecessor. The first phase of
the retooling effort focused on
uploading and updating basic
elements, such as information
regarding the SCA, membership,
meetings and events, and job
resources. Subsequent phases will
include pages on the Society’s awards,
careers in archaeology, interviews with
past key note speakers, volunteer
opportunities, field schools, links to
other historic preservation and
archaeology home pages, government
affairs/laws and regulations, and
Native American issues. The new
website is has been realized through
the collective efforts of Greg White,
SCA Business Office Manager, Past
President Dana McGowan, and
Southern Vice-President Terry Jones,
all of whom worked diligently to
ensure its on-line arrival in January.
The SCA Executive Board held its
quarterly Board Meeting in January,
where the 2004 Budget was a primary
topic of
