(3) For ComSoc, the normal Nomination Committees for paper awards organized<br />

by the publications boards nominate a short list of candidate papers, and the<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> Committee selects the 1 or 2 candidate papers out of the short list.<br />

(No paper already selected for a ComSoc paper award is eligible) The processes/timelines<br />

are the same as other paper awards. The <strong>Awards</strong> Chair appoints<br />

the two members who will serve on the subcommittee.<br />

(4) For IT, the <strong>Awards</strong> Committee for paper awards will seek nominations and submit<br />

1 or 2 candidate papers. The processes/timelines will be the same as<br />

other paper awards. The <strong>Awards</strong> Chair appoints the two members who will<br />

serve on the subcommittee.<br />

Presentation – Annually at any event sponsored by either of the two sponsoring<br />

societies selected by the recipient(s).<br />

IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications<br />

Prize – Plaque, honorarium of up to US$1,000, travel reimbursement of up<br />

to US$3,000.<br />

Description - The IEEE Guglielmo Marconi Best Paper Award is an annual award, sponsored<br />

by Qualcomm Inc., for an original paper in the field of Wireless Communications<br />

published in the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications in the previous calendar<br />

year. NOTE: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications is co-sponsored by<br />

the IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Signal Processing Society.<br />

Eligibility - Author of an original paper in the filed of Wireless Communications, published<br />

in the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications in the previous calendar<br />

year, are eligible for the Award. There are no restrictions as to IEEE membership,<br />

nationality, race, creed, age or gender.<br />

Basis for Judging – Originality, utility, timeliness, and clarity of presentation.<br />

Nominee Solicitation – Nominations solicited by the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE<br />

Transactions on Wireless Communications from the Editorial Board, guest Editors, and<br />

readership (through published notice).<br />

Selection Process – Annually solicitations are sought from 1 January through 15<br />

February; a short list is generated by 1 March; selection by an award committee<br />

(consisting of 3 members of the ComSoc <strong>Awards</strong> Committee and 1 from the Signal<br />

Processing Society) is completed by 10 April; the Chair of the Communications Society<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> Committee notifies recipients no later than 20 April.<br />

Presentation – Annually presented by the IEEE Communications Society <strong>Awards</strong><br />

Committee Chair, in the name of the IEEE Communications Society, the IEEE Signal<br />

Processing Society, and the external sponsor of the award, at the International<br />

Conference on Communications.<br />

The IEEE Communications Society Award for Outstanding Paper on<br />

New Communication Topics<br />

Prize - Plaque and honorarium of $500 per author (up to a maximum total of $2000).<br />

Eligibility - Papers that open new lines of work, envision bold approaches to communication,<br />

formulate new problems to solve, and essentially enlarge the field of communications<br />

engineering. Given to an outstanding paper published in any IEEE<br />
