Boys
Winona Ryder stars in this Interscope production
about a wild young woman who is
thrown from her horse one autumn day and
discovered by boys from a boarding school.
There, a senior ("Rambling Rose's" Lukas
Haas) secretes her in his room and nurses her
back to health—and they fall in love. Stacy
Cochran ("My New Gun") writes and directs;
Peter Frankfurt ("Juice") and Touchstone's
Paul Feldsher produce. iBuena Vista, 8/25)
Exploitips: Sounds to be an older-skewing
"chick flick" variant on the story of Snow
White. Ryder's similarly themed "Little
Women " performed surprisingly well this past
Christmas, but "Boys"— in the hands of the
deftly satiric Cochran— could be more comic
than classic. Pitch toward young women, who
might go for a romantic tale as summer ends.
Something to Talk About
lulia Roberts stars as a headstrong woman
married to a charming but adulterous man
(Dennis Quaid) in this tale of three generations
of women in a Southern horse-raising family
and their relationships with the male gender.
Robert Duvall ("The Paper"), Kyra Sedgwick
("Singles") and Cena Rowlands ("Night on
Earth") co-star for director Lasse Hallstrom
("What's Eating Gilbert Crape"). Paula
Weinstein and Anthea Sylbert produce for
Spring Creek Productions; Callie Khouri
("Thelma & Louise") scripts. (Warner, 8/4)
Exploitips: Even without a big hit In a while,
Roberts remains one ofAmerica's favorite marquee
names— less true for Quaid, another actor
in search of turnstile success ("Wyatt Earp").
With the venerable Duvall and Rowlands
aboard for the art-housey Hallstrom and literate
Weinstein ("Fearless"), one might expect high
Steal Big/Steal Little
High-octane director Andrew Davis ("The Fugitive," "Under Siege") helms this
action/comedy about two identical brothers jboth played by "Hero's" Andy
Garcia)—one a good-hearted agrarian, the otner a slicK wheeler-dealer—who
come into comic contention overo billion-dollar plot of land. Alan Arkin ("North")
and Rachel Ticotin ("Natural Born Killers") co-star. Davis scripts with Terry Kahn
and produces with Fred Caruso ("Surviving the Game"). (Savoy, 8/25)
Exploitips: Director Davis and actor Garcia are sure to be prominently featured
in Savoy's marketing plans, and they should be in yours, too.
onscreen quality over top ticket quantity. Emphasize
the Roberts name, as she's the one
element that will make the difference.
The Brothers McMullen
Marking the launch of Eox's classics division
run by former Coldwyn head Tom Rothman,
this Fox Searchlight pickup (out of
EIGHT
Sundance, where it shared a Grand jury nod)
tells the story of three Irish-Catholic brothers
(Jack Mulcahy, Edward Burns and Michael
McGlone) and their Long Island encounters
with sex, marriage and infidelity. The film
marks the first feature for co-star Burns, who
directs, scripts and produces. See our review
in the April issue. (Fox Searchlight, 8/9)
Exploitips: Low-budget art-houser has
buzz thanks to its Sundance win— an honor
previously enjoyed by Steven Soderbergh's
equally relationship-driven "sex, lies, and videotape.
" Promotional efforts should center on
hot young director Burns. New York locales
and (in markets with an appreciable Irish-
American demographic) the ethnic angle.
Fair Game
In this high-heat tale of Miami vice, William
Baldwin ("A Pyromaniac's Love Story")
and supermodel Cindy Crawford star as a
family attorney on the run from high-tech
killers and the police detective who's disobeying
orders to protect her. Director Andy
Sipes (the short "The Champion") makes his
feature debut; Charlie Fletcher scripts; |oel
Silver ("Demolition Man") produces for his
Silver Pictures. (Warner, 8/1 1
Babe
In a live-action film that blends special effects and animal performances, a
peculiar talking piglet named Babe, unwilling to accept the life that's expected
of him, decides he wants to be a sheepdog (more exactly, a sheep-pig) and
takes up herding. Director Chris Noonan produces and scripts with Georqe
Miller 'The Witches ( of Eastwick") for the Kennedy/Miller Co. (Universal, 8/4)
Exploitips: A late entry in the live-action animal flick boom touched off by
"Free Willy," itself sequelized this summer. A barnyard-type pig "petting zoo"
could spark extra interest on opening weekend.
Exploitips:
Supermodel Cindv Cra\.\iord's
dcltui dtter'- all kinds of clothes and cosmetics
tie-in possibilities via local merchants. Run a
Cindv-lookalike contest at your theatre, and
