Lucky Break
Sophie ("Strictly Ballroom's" Cia Carides),
an author of romantic but decidedly "blue"
novels, falls for Eddie (Anthony LaPaglia of
"So I Married an Axe Murderer"), a jeweler
engaged to Gloria (newcomer Rebecca
Cibney). Sophie and Eddie's passionate affair
leads to mistaken identities, physical mishaps
and several body casts. Ben Lewin ("The
Favor, the Watch and the Very Big Fish")
directs and scripts; Bob Weis ("Heartbreakers")
produces. (Goldwyn)
Exploitips: A knockabout comedy is a bit of
a switcli lor the art-fare Colclywn label, but
even specialized audiences need a laugh every
so often. Play up the laughs and break a leg.
A Month by the Lake
Based on H.E. Bates' novella, this tale of
menage a trois takes place during a pre-WWII
summer when anolder English woman ("Little
Odessa's" Vanessa Redgrave) falls in love with
an English major ("The Dresser's" Edward
Fox)—who's infatuated with a young beauty
("Pulp Fiction's" Uma Thurman). John Irvin
("Widows' Peak") directs; Trevor Bentham
adapts; Robert Fox produces. (Miramax, 8/18)
Exploitips: Art-housers go for wistful British
period films big these days, and Miramax is
their brand of choice. Your ads— think book
review section of your local paper— and
showtime phone messages should stress appealing
cast and "Widows' Peak's" Irvin.
Bookstore tie-ins and giveaways are a must.
Double Happiness
An aspiring actress (Sandra Oh) still
living
with her conservative parents goes on arranged
dates with wealthy Chinese bachelors
to keep the homestead peace.
Complications ensue when she meets a
young man (Callum Rennie), who's not Chinese
and not rich. Written and directed by
Mina Shum, the film was a hit at the Berlin
and Toronto tests and won two of Canada's
Genie awards. (Fine Line)
Exploitips: The Asian audience is growing
all the time, as is the desire of non-Asian
audience to see good dramatizations ofAsian
milieus. Aim for the art-house crowd, and give
this one time to build some word of mouth.
Mallrats
Kevin Smith—writer/director of "Clerks"
takes another look at the late-teens/earlytwenties
crowd but changes his focus from the
c|uickmart to the shopping mall, whose denizens
discuss romance, sex research. Star Wars
philosophy and 3-D art. The ensemble cast
includes Jeremy London, Jason Lee and
Shannen Doherty ("FHeathers"). Jim Jacks and
Sean Daniel, the duo behind "Dazed and
Confused," produce. (Gramercy, 8/4)
Exploitips: From "Dazed and Confused"
and "Before Sunrise" to "S.F. W. " and "Reality
Bites, " Cen-X flicks have had an unsteady commercial
history. If anyone can pull this off,
though, it's Smith, whose "Clerks" played like
a twentysomething slacker piece as reimagined
by Neil Simon in his prime. Expect a very
commercial soundtrack, with a bounty of
cross-marketing possibilities as a result.
Call Me Victor
shown in the Cinema in France section at
Cannes in 1993, "Je M'Appelle Victor" is a
comic coming-of-age story that focuses on an
1 1 -year-old boy who falls in love with a 6- 1
year-old girl and turns for advice to his eccentric
great-aunt, who hasn't left the family attic
for 30 years. Jeanne Moreau and Micheline
Presle headline for debut director Guy
Jacques, who scripts with Emmanuel List.
Bertrand Dussart and Catherine Dussart produce.
(Sony Classics)
Exploitips: If arty French-language pics do
well for you, take a chance on this one.
Arabian Knight
Hoping to tind better fortune now than
when it launched its children's division two
Augusts ago with "Into the West," Miramax
forays into animation with this tale of a cobbler
and a princessand the thief who changes
their destinies forever in an ancient golden
city. Among the voice talents are a chance
teaming of two late, great horror-film vets,
Donald Pleasance and Vincent Price. Richard
Williams (an Oscar winner for helming "Who
Framed Roger Rabbit's" animation) directs
and co-scripts; noted film financier Jake Eberts
("Chariots of Fire," "Dances With Wolves")
