“What motivated you to enter implantology?”

OPTION FOR POSITIONING Implantology is exciting as a
developing, future-oriented dental discipline. Two factors were
significant in my decision to enter implantology: with demographic
developments patients are aging. An implant-supported
denture can help older people achieve better qualify of life. The
other factor was the ever-increasing economic pressure on dentists.
This makes it very important for dentists to position themselves
correctly on the ever more open market. A good position
is to specialize in implantology, implant surgery or implant
prosthetics. This gives not only the option of an expanded
range of treatment but also the option of becoming less dependent
on public health policy.
ENTRY BY DISSERTATION Another foundation stone for my
entry into implantology was the choice of my dissertation topic
in the direction of implantology and bone regeneration therapy.
During the course students gain at least an impression of the
theoretical aspects of implant-based treatment and the current
literature. After the course this basic knowledge makes it easy
to find a modern implant practice for the practicum.
The selection of the correct practice for this period is very
important for learning basic implant surgery. The new dentist is
also recommended to attend various professional continuing
education courses during the practicum period, such as confe-
rences for beginners in implantology, courses offered by wellknown
professional implantology societies, practical workshops
and regional study groups. Continuing education is essential
for dentists who want to enter implantology and to maintain a
high level of technical knowledge.
SIMPLER AND SAFER WITH DIGITALIZATION It is also
important to remain current with the increasing pace of development
in implantology. The advances in the area of 3D
diagnostics, virtual 3D implant planning and their implementation
with bone-based drilling templates are immense.
The procedures for computer-supported 3D implant placement
will offer greater safety in therapy and accuracy and reduce
the risk of complications. Entry is simpler.
