DAY OF THE LORD 157<br />

This scene, which <strong>St</strong>. John saw in heaven clearly shows us two events<br />

following one another in sequence. <strong>The</strong> first sickle that reaps the earth<br />

corresponds to the angels gathering the elect to meet the Lord in the<br />

air, the ‘rapture <strong>of</strong> the elect.’ <strong>The</strong> second sickle is the destruction <strong>of</strong> the<br />

wicked represented by the enormous blood shed. Note that the second<br />

reaping is ordered by the angel having power over fire, for the<br />

destruction <strong>of</strong> the world will be by “fire which comes down from God.”<br />

THE FIERY DESTRUCTION OF THE WORLD:<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are many verses in the Bible that tell us that the day <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Lord (the second coming <strong>of</strong> the Lord) will be associated with a fiery end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the world. Here are some <strong>of</strong> these verses:<br />

Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour<br />

before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. (Ps 50:3)<br />

A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about. (Ps<br />

97:3)<br />

For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a<br />

whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames <strong>of</strong><br />

fire. For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh:<br />

and the slain <strong>of</strong> the LORD shall be many. (Isa 66:15-16)<br />

<strong>The</strong> strongest indication <strong>of</strong> this, however, is given to us in <strong>St</strong>. Peter’s<br />

second epistle, chapter 3:<br />

But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are<br />

kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day <strong>of</strong> judgment and<br />

perdition <strong>of</strong> ungodly men. (II Pet 3:7)<br />

But the day <strong>of</strong> the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which<br />

the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall<br />

melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein<br />

shall be burned up. (II Pet 3:10)<br />

To me, personally, the image given by <strong>St</strong>. Peter for the fiery end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

world looks like that <strong>of</strong> a major thermo-nuclear war. Another passage<br />

in the Old Testament that strongly suggests this is found in the Book <strong>of</strong><br />

Zechariah:
