f^laughton's Variety and Embassy theatres
presented each child attending a recent
Sunday show with a pass to Tropical Hobbyland.
The pass also entitled the bearer to a
free You-Go-I-Go game . of Variety
Club members and their children are
eligible to membership in the newly formed
women's committee of the local tent. Election
of officers is on the agenda for a May 27
meeting.
Emogene Leslie of this city has been named
Miss Miami of 1949. A model, she w-ill compete
for the title. Miss F'nrida, which can
put her in line for the Mi. America contest.
"Little Women," which lecently broke records
at the Emba.ssy for length of run of a
regular-priced feature, is now playing at
Paramount's Sheridan, Florida and Cinema,
and at the independent Normandy as part
of a double-feature program . Gray,
who conducts a late-at-night radio program
here, has made a number of motion picture
musical shorts which are featured prominently
when bookings bring them to local
theatres. The Lincoln at pre.sent has a large
easel poster in its outer lobby.
The Miracle Theatre's Saturday children's
show presented Bob Ellis, Mystogogue of
Magic. Bob is a University of Miami student.
Located near the university, the Miracle

Conte cut his Miami Beach vacation short
when Pat Kane, his stand-in, was promoted
by Darryl Zanuck to featured player. Conte
returned home to coach Kane.

Bob Freeman, the personable youngster who
won a week's date at the Olympia in a Daily
News Youth Roundup contest, confessed after
the finals, held at the theatre, that he was
so nervous under the bright spotlight that
he thought he didn't have a chance. However,
singing star Freddie Stewart, one of the
contest judges, commented that Bob's work
was the best of any amateur sing«r he'd
viewed in years Wometco's State presented
a double feature, "The Mutineers"
and "I Cheated the Law."
Pincus Tell, better known as Chris Graham,
has a new book out called "Opportmiities
in Motion Pictures" . hygiene
film, "Street Corner," has opened here, beginning
an extended run at Bern.stein's Dixie
downtown. Showings are in the .same manner
as the recent "Mom and Dad" which ran
so successfully at the Tivoli.
Video fans were promised a treat recently
when a talented singer from a local club was
scheduled to make his WTVJ debut ... It
was "Leonard Sacks night," at the Variety
Club recently. Barker Sacks, who is a Coral
Gables furniture dealer when not engaged in
Variety activities, was host to the professional
talent at the weekly benefit show in
the club's rooftop rooms.
WTVJ, Wometco's television station, showed
the third chapter of the Eisenhower documentary,
"Crusade in Europe." The fi'm was
edited from some 165 million feet of film,
much of it captured from Germany and Japs.
It was sold exclusively to television. The
third chapter is entitled "America Goes to
War" . Dawson is mentioned in a
Hollywood studio release reading, "Florida
beauty has been added to a California-made
motion picture. The beauty is Irmgard Dawson,
twice "Miss Miami' and once 'Miss
Florida.' "
Charles Skouras was among film executives
before whom Buster McGovern performed on
the accordion and piano at the Kentucky
Derby. McGovern has returned to Miami .
Al Weiss of Paramount's Olympia booked
"The Quiz of the Three Ts" for a recent
stage presentation. Broadcast locally, it offered
prizes, including a trip to Havana.
'12 OXlock' Filming
Completed in South
MIAMI— Twentieth Century-Fox pulled up
stakes here in Florida after a month's filming
of "TR-elve O'clock H gh" with Gregory
Peck. The Eglin nir force base here, and
Ozark and Enterpri.se, Ala., were the scenes
for the shooting.
About 72 member.s of the studio company
headed by veteran Director Henry King
have been here since April 17. King said
the only complication about the Eglin field
f Imlng was that the base's pine ti-ees didn't
fit too well into the setting for an English
air base, locale of the story.
Among actors brought here for the filming
were Dean Jagger. Don Hicks. Hugh Marlowe,
John McKee, Paul Stewart and Lee
McGregor. Miami cameraman Joe Gibson
returned home having completed his aerial
photography for the pi'oduction. Shots were
made with B17s flying In the same formations
which carried the first American
bombs to Germany. The U.S. air force cooperated
in making the film which is a semidocumentary.
It will be released next year.
Jeff Chandler will play an Apache chief
in "Arrow," a 20th-Fox picture.
Gryder and Alig Quit
Florida State Posts
JACKSONVILLE, FLA.—Two Florida State
Theatres executives have resigned.
Glenn Gryder, film buyer and manager of
the booking department for the la.st 17 years,
left the company May 14 and has joined the
Talgar circuit with offices here as head
buyer and booker.
Frank Alig, treasurer of Florida States,
will leave June 1 and will enter private business
at Lakeland.
