and offices had yule festivities throughout the
week . . . The Allied held open house in its
meeting room here with President Jack Kirsch
on hand to greet members, civic leaders and

General" was available this week at no cost
for veterans hospital and shut-in groups by
contacting Irv Kup of the Chicago Sun-Times.

The picture will open at the Essaness Woods
December 27. A 35rmn projector and operator
also was provided by the Essaness Corp.
Woods Manager Jack Belasco says: "With
a water shortage in New York they ought to
send Al Jolson there to sing 'April Shows'."
Jack says, "They still have WetBrook Pegler"
... A program of 1915 Charlie Chaplin comedies
will be shown at 2 p. m. next Saturday
for the members of the Chicago Historical society
and their families in the Society auditorium
in Lincoln park. Admission is free
Eager," and "Blossoms in the
Dust" are being readied for reissue by MGM
February 16.
Carl Krueger, producer, completed location
shooting here of his Eagle Lion release,
"The Golden Gloves Story." and announced
he plans to make three more pictures in Chicago
during 1950. All three features will be
filmed entirely in this city as well as financed
by Chicagoans, with distribution to be handled
by a major film company. Krueger,
now on the coast cutting and editing "Golden
Gloves," will return here late in January to
arrange a world premiere in late February.
A zingy tieup ad campaign with Thompson's
restaurants broke last weekend with a
series of 1,000-hne Tribune ads. The first
ad on Bob Hope plugged Thompson's, but
with a supergenerous plug for "Great Lover"
at the Chicago. Set by Ed Seguin, B&K publicist,
the series is tied up with Chicago attractions
. . . The Ritz brothers will appear
at the Chicago January 6 with Milton Berle's
"Always Leave Them Laughing."
William J. Doyle, U-I salesman and officer
of Philadelphia Variety tent, stopped at
the Variety Club here with his wife . . . Arthur
Schoenstadt turned his Piccadilly Theatre
over to the fourth ward committeeman
Joe Plunkett for the ward youth clubs annual
Christmas party . RKO Palace
sparked business in a big way over the holidays
by taking free 5x7 photos of children
with Santa in the lobby of the theatre every
day from 2 to 8 p. m. Children must be accompanied
by an adult. Santa also had free
gifts for every child.
The Lakeside of B&K circuit is featured
in a special series of family entertainments
until December 23. Seven programs were
ananged for the pre-holiday period.
Bob Gardner is installing equipment in
the new Fox Lake Tlieatre, headed by Robert
Bartell. The new house seats 600 and
will be ready in early spring . E.
Brown, well-known Cleveland popcorn
broker, died recently. He had been with
the Marquardt Co. and was well known to
the theatre trade . Essaness circuit has
booked "Inspector General" to follow "Pmky"
for the Loop Woods Theatre. The picture
will open Christmas eve.
The Buckingham Theatre, Essaness circuit,
is receiving a stainless steel and porcelain
front. Work will be finished January 1
Essaness circuit has selected architect
Lewis Eugene Wilson, Los Angeles, to
draw plans for three drive-ins planned in
this area for next year. The circuit now is
operating the huge Starlite Outdoor on the
south side of Chicago . new Coed Theatre
installed RCA sound and a new-type
vinyl screen.
Northside Theatre of Balaban & Katz, under
the supervision of District Manager Abe
Piatt, held its get-together breakfast and
Ray Carsky, director of merchandise, told
the managers and their assistants about the
outlook for popcorn, candy and beverage fields
and also the tryout of the sale of chocolatecovered
taffy apples. Edward Trunk spoke
on efficiency of theatre management and
Walda Bail surveyed publicity and advertising
programs of the circuit . . . Irving Mack
will go to Miami for the holidays to join his
wife who now is there enjoying the Florida
sunshine . Rubens, head of B&K
maintenance department who was seriously
injured in an auto smashup, is at the Little
Company of Mary hospital, Evergreen Park.
Xmas Ticket Sales High
CHICAGO—Pete Panagos, promotion manager
for Alliance Theatres circuit, reports that
merchants and food distributors in various
circuit cities have taken at least a quarter
of a million tickets for special Christmas
shows put on by the circuit December_24. The
tickets were given to customers as a holiday
gift and the individual theatre will be turned
over to the holiday ticket guests under Alliance
supervision. This plan was tried out
last year by Mid-States circuit in Washington
and 150,0000 tickets were sold to merchants.
Harold Teel Buys Theatre
ALEXIS, ILL.—Tlie Fern Theatre here has
been purchased by Harold Teel, formerly of
Geneva, 111., from Mr. and Mrs. John Dykeman,
who are planning to move to a farm
they own near Avon, 111.
Don Slddmore Buys Theatre
WATERLOO. IND.— Dick Tomkinson has
sold his interest in the Lyric Theatre here to
Mr. and Mrs. Don Skidmore, formerly of
Marcelles, Mich.
