Johnson, of Olsen and Johnson "Hellzapoppin' " fame, is in town with his show. He says that negotiations have been going on for some time for the purchase of the Cole Bros, circus which winters here. Al Jolson. a circus fan, may join Olsen and Johnson on a torn- if plans work out. Arthur Wirtz, who stages the Sonja Henie ice shows, is also interested in the circus deal. Al Wilkie is pleased that for its foiu-th consecutive year, Paramount successfully staged its special Christmas toy matinees at the Coral. Dade, Boulevard. Cinema and Harry Brandt of Shores theatres (lOi . . . Brandt Theatres, flew here from New York in connection with the proposed operation of a theatre in a new building now under construction on the southwest corner of East Flagler street and Third avenue. A church formerly occupied this corner. Architect's plans call for 760 seats. There is a possibility that the house may have a newsreel-short subject policy, with a new show beginning each hour. A Howard Johnson restaurant is reported to be negotiating for space on the same property. Brandt's new Miami Beach theatre will be known as the Roosevelt. The opening is .scheduled for Christmas eve. Both Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and FDR jr. have been invited to the premiere ... An entire Miami Beach block is being eyed by a group of investors for possible construction of a TVradio center. Reports indicate that archi- tects are already blue-printing the project to include ground-floor shops, second-floor radio and television studios, and a penthouse studio for audience-participation shows. The Olympia's music director Les Rhode is sending a band to Barcelona, Venezuela, Joe Rynock, former for New Year's eve . . . assistant manager at the Lincoln, is now manager of the Surf . Olympia, which lends its facilities to the Variety children's theatre series, will be the scene of "Broken Toys," a musical, second of the productions. Early Construction Date Slated at Delray Beach DELRAY BEACH, FLA.—The possibil ty of an early construction date for a new theatre was revealed at a political rally by James W. Galloway, candidate for city councilman and owner of the property on which the building is to be erected. Original plans for the theatre were drawn over a year ago but litigation has prevented Galloway and the theatre corporation from making a start. At present, no details are available as to possible changes in the original drawings, and the actual date on which construction will begin has not been revealed. Location of Galloway's land is on Atlantic avenue just east of the intercoastal waterway bridge. $50,000 Drive-In Started Near Forrest City, Ark. MEMPHIS—A new $50,000 drive-in has been started for opening next spring three miles west of Forrest City, Ark., for Walter Priddy and Don Montgomery. As soon as the site is cleared, a screen and projection house will be built and restrooms installed. The new showhouse will be for 400 cars. Contractor is Tri-State Theatre Supply Co. of Memphis. Robert Blank is manager of Tn-State. Xmas Eve Shows Given For Memphis Shut-Ins MEMPHIS— Because many Memphis shutins never get to go to motion pictures, films were taken to them here Christmas eve. Alex Bernstein, Southern Visual Films, Inc., and a group of Memphis churches and individuals made it p>ossible. Portable projectors and 16mm films were used. Films were furnished by Southern. Many were shown in homes. Some in hospitals and institutions.
