Evoluti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dust</strong> <strong>in</strong> Protoplanetary Disks 149<br />

<strong>The</strong> results <strong>of</strong> the spectral decompositi<strong>on</strong> support the usage <strong>of</strong> the strength <strong>of</strong> the<br />

10 µm silicate feature (S 10µm<br />

peak<br />

) as a proxy <strong>of</strong> the mean gra<strong>in</strong> size <strong>of</strong> dust <strong>in</strong> the disk<br />

surface. This is supported by the correlati<strong>on</strong> between S 10µm<br />

peak<br />

and mean gra<strong>in</strong> size and<br />

lack <strong>of</strong> correlati<strong>on</strong> with the mean crystall<strong>in</strong>ity.<br />

Mean cluster ages and disk fracti<strong>on</strong>s are used as <strong>in</strong>dicators <strong>of</strong> the evoluti<strong>on</strong>ary<br />

stage <strong>of</strong> the different populati<strong>on</strong>s. Our results show that the different regi<strong>on</strong>s have<br />

similar distributi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> mean gra<strong>in</strong> sizes and crystall<strong>in</strong>ity fracti<strong>on</strong>s regardless <strong>of</strong> the<br />

spread <strong>in</strong> mean ages <strong>of</strong> 1 – 8 Myr. Thus, despite the fact that the majority <strong>of</strong> disks<br />

dissipate with<strong>in</strong> a few Myr, the surface dust properties do not depend <strong>on</strong> age for<br />

those disks that have not yet dissipated <strong>in</strong> the 1 – 8 Myr range. This po<strong>in</strong>ts to a<br />

rapid change <strong>in</strong> the compositi<strong>on</strong> and crystall<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> the dust <strong>in</strong> the early stages (≤ 1<br />

Myr) that is ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed essentially until the disks dissipate.<br />
