(Figure 15 and 16). The river run-off of Buyant Gol reaches its highest amount since 1967 in
1998, what has to be interpreted to be due to in a hot summer with melting glaciers in the
Altai Mountains. In 1998 the July and August average temperature (Fig. 17 and 18) was very
high (due to a hot summer) and we have had moderate January and relatively warm February
temperatures (see Fig.19). That means, that a dramatic and shortterm warming leads to a high
amount of river run-off and in consequence to a large offer of irrigation water. In order to
react on such events, it would be most suitable to store the surplus water in a reservoir behind
a headwork.
