arold R. Jackson, the new Commanding Officer of the<br />

Jtiaircraft Replacement Training Center, Camp \\'allace,<br />

exas. Colonel Jackson assumed command on June 23,<br />

-l3.succeeding Brigadier General I-Iorner Case, who had<br />

n temporarily commander of the i\ARTC since the<br />

General Hugh N. Herrick, who was the last permanent<br />

lInander of the Ai\HTC. General Herrick had been on<br />

mporary leave of absence due to illness. Colonel Jackson<br />

First Lieutenant James L. ~ IcDaniel, <strong>Air</strong> Liaison Officer<br />

for the camp, infomls us that he has been able to fulfill all<br />

airplane missions through cooperation with Captain Johnson<br />

R. \Varren, AC, Commanding Officer of the Tow<br />

Target Squadron, The first mission was flown on ~Iav 10<br />

~his Tow Target Squadron has Venturas (8-34's) for all<br />

t,owmg, purposes; n!ght fl?,i~g is furnished by the Squadron's<br />

.\1'-] I s; and trackmg mISSIOnsare flown bv Owls (0-47's).<br />

There has been a spirit in the squadron to flv all missions<br />

regar~lless .of the ho~r, to insure the proper t;aining of th~<br />

men m tillS camp, 1 hat spirit has been greatly appreciated<br />

by the members of Camp \Vallace, '<br />

To aid instruction in orientation, synchronization, and<br />

no~enclature of equipment, First Lieutenant Arthur J.<br />

Skmner ?as ~ade a model of a searchlight section to scale.<br />

The sectIOn mcludes control station, searchlight, sound locator,<br />

and power plant. These models were made from<br />

scrap lumber to a scale of one to five. All parts are movable<br />

to t~e extent tha~ they can be used for orienting.<br />

Lleuten~nt ?k.mner originated the idea and drew up the<br />

plan of thIS mmlature unit. These models mav be used to<br />

teach searchlights on rainy day programs effe~tivelv. Furthermore,<br />

the students grasp the fundamentals or' a unit<br />

more quickly because of the reduced size, for the student<br />

can see the unit as a whole. Thev were constructed with<br />

everyday hand tools of the Camp \Vallace Utilitv Repairman's<br />

<strong>School</strong> in about two weeks ..
