HIED5033 Student Affairs in Higher Education (Fa) Study <strong>of</strong> origins, functions, and policies in<br />

student personnel services in contemporary 2- and 4-year colleges and universities with emphasis<br />

on <strong>the</strong> student and student development.<br />

HIED5043 The Student in Higher Education (Sp) Provides those who work or plan to work<br />

in post-secondary educational institutions with an understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student population in<br />

contemporary colleges and universities.<br />

HIED504V Practicum in Higher Education (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-6) Students are assigned to a<br />

HIED5083 History and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Higher Education (Sp) An examination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> history<br />

and development <strong>of</strong> higher education including <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> philosophy, objectives, and functions<br />

<strong>of</strong> various types <strong>of</strong> institutions.<br />

HIED5173 Individual and Group Management Skills (Even years, Sp) Development <strong>of</strong> knowledge,<br />

skill, and confidence in personal management, interpersonal relations, and structured<br />

group facilitation in a higher education setting. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> Standing. For students not<br />

HIED5643 Internship Seminar in Student Affairs (Sp) The Internship Seminar in Student<br />

Affairs is designed to give students <strong>the</strong> opportunity to work in a functional area <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs.<br />

The seminar will meet as a class five times over <strong>the</strong> semester. May be repeated for up to 6 hours<br />

<strong>of</strong> degree credit.<br />

HIED6023 Introduction to <strong>the</strong> Study <strong>of</strong> Higher Education (Sp, Fa) A requirement for all<br />

new doctoral and specialist students. Familiarization with writing requirements, library search<br />

HIED6083 Management Skills for Effective Leadership (Irregular) Development <strong>of</strong> management<br />

skills that enhance leadership includes understanding yourself, managing yourself, team<br />

building, personnel selection, group and individual decision-making, problem solving, managing<br />

conflict, developing valid performance appraisal systems, conducting performance appraisal interview,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r topics <strong>of</strong> current interest. Prerequisite: Doctoral students in Higher Education<br />

or permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> instructor.<br />

including fair employment; due process; torts liability and contracts; student rights landmark<br />

court decisions; federal and state legislation having an impact on education.<br />

HIED6663 Finance and Fiscal Management (Sp) Higher education finance and budgeting<br />

practices: problems, issues, trends, and policy issues in higher education.<br />

HIED6683 Governance and Policy Making in Higher Education (Odd years, Fa) An analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> governance and policy making affecting <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> colleges and universities. Attention is<br />

given to policy generation, governing board supervision, and <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> institutional, pr<strong>of</strong>essional,<br />

and regional groups as well as community, state, and federal pressures.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> general program in vocational rehabilitation counseling,<br />

two specialty emphasis tracks are <strong>of</strong>fered: rehabilitation job development and<br />

job placement; and independent living.<br />

Prerequisites to <strong>the</strong> Degree Program: For acceptance into <strong>the</strong> master’s<br />

degree program in rehabilitation, <strong>the</strong> program stipulates, in addition to <strong>the</strong><br />

general requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> School, an undergraduate degree in a<br />

social or behavioral science, or o<strong>the</strong>r related fields.<br />

Requirements for <strong>the</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Science Degree in Rehabilitation:<br />

Candidates for <strong>the</strong> general master’s degree and both tracks must complete<br />

48 semester hours. Students select <strong>the</strong> practicum, internships, and electives<br />

with <strong>the</strong> permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir adviser, according to <strong>the</strong>ir specialty emphasis<br />

track. A <strong>the</strong>sis may be included within any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tracks. Students may<br />

complete an additional 12 hours <strong>of</strong> course work to qualify for counseling<br />

licensure.<br />

The general program in vocational rehabilitation (48 hours) stresses <strong>the</strong><br />

skills <strong>of</strong> case management and vocational counseling with people who are disabled.<br />

The rehabilitation job development and job placement track emphasizes<br />

case management and life planning for people with disabilities who may not<br />

be ready for vocational planning. All students in <strong>the</strong> vocational rehabilitation<br />

program complete a practicum and internship in a vocational rehabilitation<br />

complete a practicum and internship in an independent living center, or community<br />

service provider that specializes in independent living.<br />

Prerequisites to <strong>the</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy Degree Program: The<br />

applicant must have completed a master’s degree or its equivalent in<br />

rehabilitation counseling or a closely related discipline and must meet<br />

<strong>the</strong> general admission requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> School. Applicants<br />

are encouraged to have had three years <strong>of</strong> successful experience related to<br />

<strong>the</strong> applicant’s degree and career objectives. After gaining admission to<br />
