The Center for Statistical Research and Consulting will be a service and research<br />

unit <strong>of</strong> UA, administratively housed in Department <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Sciences, providing<br />

faculty and graduate students in <strong>the</strong> university with an environment for collaboration<br />

in research and instruction emphasizing statistical / quantitative approaches. It<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers statistical consulting and statistical s<strong>of</strong>tware support to faculty, staff, graduate<br />

and undergraduate students conducting research at UA. The center will extend this<br />

statistical support to <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Arkansas, directly providing some consulting services<br />

but primarily acting as a conduit for industry, government, and non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organizations<br />

to engage campus faculty and graduate students in consulting opportunities.<br />

The community support activities from <strong>the</strong> center will stimulate and enhance campus<br />

research and instructional efforts as well as provide important services to organizations<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> region.<br />

The mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Center for Statistical Research and Consulting is to participate<br />

in research to provide high quality statistical input to high quality research projects,<br />

train statisticians to interact effectively with investigators from o<strong>the</strong>r disciplines, and<br />

encourage collaborative research between statisticians and investigators from o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

disciplines.<br />

The center is a fee-for-service unit. The initial consulting meeting with a client is<br />

provided at no cost. All subsequent and follow-up visits will require financial support.<br />

Established in 1974, this center provides human resource and organization development<br />

services for a broad audience in <strong>the</strong> rehabilitation and disability communities.<br />

Projects managed by CURRENTS vary in scope from state and local to regional and<br />

national levels. The center is housed at <strong>the</strong> Hot Springs Rehabilitation Center, Hot<br />

Springs, Arkansas.<br />

Established in 1981, this national center conducts research and training programs<br />

to enhance rehabilitation efforts on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 31 million U.S. citizens<br />

who are deaf or hard <strong>of</strong> hearing. These programmatic efforts are directed toward<br />

enhancing <strong>the</strong> career preparation, job entry and placement, career advancement,<br />

and workplace communication accommodations consistent with <strong>the</strong> Americans<br />

with Disabilities Act. The center is located in Little Rock and is currently conducting<br />

research focused on improving <strong>the</strong> nation’s services for those individuals<br />

with functional limitations that necessitate intensive and longer-term education,<br />

rehabilitation and related services to enhance employment, independent living<br />

and community participation.<br />

With designation by <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Arkansas Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees to make poultry<br />

science a center <strong>of</strong> excellence in <strong>the</strong> state’s university system, <strong>the</strong> department <strong>of</strong> poultry<br />

science became a reality in 1992.<br />

The Center <strong>of</strong> Excellence for Poultry Science (CEPS) is comprised <strong>of</strong> full-time<br />

poultry science faculty members, full-time USDA/ARS Poultry Research Group faculty<br />

members, graduate assistants, adjunct faculty, and poultry science departmental<br />

staff. CEPS receives multidisciplinary contributions from several University departments<br />

including animal science; biological and agricultural engineering; biological<br />

sciences; crop, soil, and environmental sciences; entomology; food science; industrial<br />

engineering; <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Human and Environmental Sciences; and <strong>the</strong> UALR College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pharmacy.<br />

The Department <strong>of</strong> Poultry Science and <strong>the</strong> research group are housed in <strong>the</strong><br />

John W. Tyson Building, which is a 112,000-square-foot, state-<strong>of</strong>-<strong>the</strong>-art laboratory<br />

and <strong>of</strong>fice complex that was completed <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 1995 on <strong>the</strong> UA campus. In addition<br />

to <strong>the</strong> John W. Tyson Building on <strong>the</strong> main campus, CEPS comprises <strong>the</strong><br />

following facilities:<br />

• FDA-licensed feed mill;<br />

• 10,000-square-foot processing plant used for teaching processing techniques<br />

and for ongoing food safety research projects;<br />

• 12,000-square-foot John Kirkpatrick Skeeles Poultry Health Laboratory,<br />

which holds <strong>the</strong> highest bio-safety rating (P3) available in <strong>the</strong> country;<br />

• A poultry research farm facility including hatchery, genetics unit, pulletrearing<br />

facility, battery brooder, caged layer house, broiler breeder houses and<br />

turkey houses;<br />

• Four full-sized broiler houses equipped with computerized environmental<br />

control and data collection systems capable <strong>of</strong> commercial-type production<br />

research; and<br />

• A broiler breeder research facility that includes two full-size broiler breeder<br />

houses, a pullet-rearing facility, and quality assurance building with <strong>of</strong>fices,<br />

classroom, and egg holding capacity.<br />

The Chemical Hazards Research Center determines <strong>the</strong> consequences <strong>of</strong> atmospheric<br />

release <strong>of</strong> potentially hazardous materials with a present emphasis on liquefied<br />

natural gas in transportation and storage operations. Computational models are used<br />

in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> wind tunnel at <strong>the</strong> center, which is presently <strong>the</strong> largest lowspeed<br />

wind tunnel suited for such studies.<br />

The Community and Family Institute is a joint effort <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Arkansas<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Harvey and Bernice Jones Center for Families in Springdale, Arkansas.<br />
