SPAN5393 19th Century Spanish American Literature (Irregular) Study <strong>of</strong> representative<br />

literary works from Independence (1810) to 1900’s. The course covers<br />

Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism/Naturalism, and Modernism and <strong>the</strong> role<br />

<strong>of</strong> literature in <strong>the</strong> nation-building process. The course will be taught in Spanish.<br />

SPAN5403 Spanish American Theatre (Irregular) Historical examination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>atre<br />

in Spanish America, with close analysis particularly <strong>of</strong> representative works and<br />

movements in <strong>the</strong> 20th century.<br />

SPAN5433 Cervantes: Don Quijote (Irregular) A close reading <strong>of</strong> Spain’s greatest literary<br />

masterpiece.<br />

SPAN5453 Cinema and Literature (Irregular) This course examines several Latin<br />

American and Spanish texts and <strong>the</strong>ir film adaptations as well as <strong>the</strong> main film<br />

making trends in <strong>the</strong> Hispanic world.<br />

SPAN5463 20th Century Spanish American Literature (Irregular) Critical survey <strong>of</strong> major<br />

movements and outstanding and representative works in 20th century prose<br />

and poetry, from <strong>the</strong> Mexican Revolution and <strong>the</strong> avant-garde to <strong>the</strong> contemporary<br />

boom and post-boom.<br />

SPAN5773 Indigenismo Literature (Irregular) A study <strong>of</strong> ‘indigenismo’, an intellectual<br />

and literary tradition in Latin America examining <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> exploitation and marginalization<br />

<strong>of</strong> indigenous peoples. Readings include texts by Mariategui, Icaza,<br />

Andrade, Asturias, Arguedas, Castellanos, and also ‘indigenista’ works in music<br />

and <strong>the</strong> plastic arts.<br />

SPAN5883 Indigenous Literatures (Irregular) A study <strong>of</strong> native oral narratives, literary<br />
