The <strong>Graduate</strong> School Departments and Course Descriptions<br />

Talented Education. The student must complete a total <strong>of</strong> 60 graduate hours<br />

that is planned with an adviser and approved by an advisory committee. The<br />

program <strong>of</strong> study must include 12 hours in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> specialization and nine<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> study outside <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> specialization. The program <strong>of</strong> study must<br />

also include ESRM 5393 Statistics in Education and Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions, and<br />

CIED 680V, Ed.S. Project (three hours). Many programs also require ESRM<br />

6623 or equivalent to prepare <strong>the</strong> project design.<br />

The Ph.D. Program in Curriculum and Instruction: The emphasis <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy degree program in curriculum and instruction is on<br />

<strong>the</strong> generation <strong>of</strong> new knowledge or <strong>the</strong> reformulation <strong>of</strong> existing knowledge<br />

as a basis for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> education <strong>the</strong>ory ra<strong>the</strong>r than solely on <strong>the</strong><br />

improvement <strong>of</strong> educational practice. The test <strong>of</strong> knowledge for a person<br />

working toward this degree is not conditioned upon ability to improve educational<br />

practice but ra<strong>the</strong>r upon possible contribution to <strong>the</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> educational <strong>the</strong>ory. Persons working toward this degree goal may assist in<br />

<strong>the</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> practice, but <strong>the</strong>ir interests in <strong>the</strong> results are conditioned<br />

primarily by <strong>the</strong> extent to which <strong>the</strong>y assist in reformulation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

<strong>the</strong>oretical base. Highly developed research skills are an essential facet <strong>of</strong> this<br />

degree program.<br />

Prerequisites to <strong>the</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy Degree Program: Applicants<br />

for <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy must meet <strong>the</strong> following requirements<br />

in addition to <strong>the</strong> applicable requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University prior to admission<br />

to <strong>the</strong> degree program:<br />

1. Have a minimum grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 3.50 on all graduate<br />

courses.<br />

2. Have a master’s degree with a minimum <strong>of</strong> 33 semester hours in a<br />

related area.<br />

3. Have minimum <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Examinations scores <strong>of</strong> 500<br />

on <strong>the</strong> quantitative section, 500 on <strong>the</strong> verbal section, and an<br />

appropriate score on <strong>the</strong> writing portion completed no more than<br />

five years prior to <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> application.<br />

4. Have completed a minimum <strong>of</strong> three years full-time pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

teaching experience or equivalent employment experiences prior to<br />

<strong>the</strong> application to <strong>the</strong> doctoral program.<br />

5. Complete a writing assignment designed and evaluated by <strong>the</strong> specific<br />

program area <strong>of</strong> concentration and administered through <strong>the</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Curriculum and Instruction.<br />

6. Complete a departmental interview concerning personal goals,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional goals, background experiences, and <strong>the</strong> results from<br />

<strong>the</strong> previously completed writing assignment.<br />

Requirements for <strong>the</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy Degree: After acceptance<br />

into <strong>the</strong> program, <strong>the</strong> candidate for <strong>the</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy degree must<br />

meet <strong>the</strong> general University degree requirements, complete residency requirements,<br />

and complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 102 semester hours <strong>of</strong> graduate study<br />

approved by <strong>the</strong> Doctoral Advisory Committee, including 60 semester hours<br />

taken on this campus. The residency requirements are <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> two<br />

consecutive semesters on campus during which <strong>the</strong> student will complete a<br />

one-semester internship in college teaching and a one-semester internship in<br />

research.<br />

The program <strong>of</strong> study for <strong>the</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy candidate must<br />

include <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

1. 33 semester hours or more in an approved master’s degree<br />

2. 15 hours in research and statistics to include <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

Note: Electives/cognate hours must be taken outside <strong>the</strong> program. Elective/cognate<br />

hours may include <strong>the</strong> specialization in a content area; no more<br />

than six (6) hours may be taken as independent study.<br />

Curriculum and Instruction (CIED)<br />

CIED4433 The Moral Mind in Action (Fa) The Moral Mind in Action explores how people reason<br />

through moral dilemmas and prepares students to more effectively recognize and resolve<br />

moral problems. Best practices <strong>of</strong> teachers and administrators <strong>of</strong> K-16 character education programs<br />

are discussed.<br />

CIED4443 Moral Courage (Sp) Moral Courage explores <strong>the</strong> factors that support translating<br />

moral thinking into moral action. This course draws from <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> positive psychology to guide<br />

students as <strong>the</strong>y leverage existing strengths and develop new strategies for acting with moral<br />

courage in <strong>the</strong>ir personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional lives. Best practices <strong>of</strong> teachers and administrators <strong>of</strong><br />

K-16 character education programs are discussed.<br />

CIED5003 Childhood Seminar (Sp) This course is designed to syn<strong>the</strong>size <strong>the</strong> foundational<br />

content presented in <strong>the</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching core courses. It focuses on refinement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

generalized knowledge to accommodate specialized content children. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional attitudes,<br />

knowledge and skills relevant to young children. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional attitudes, knowledge and skills<br />

applicable to today’s early childhood educator are addressed. Prerequisite: Admission to <strong>the</strong><br />

CHED M.A.T.<br />

CIED5012 Measurement, Research, and Statistical Concepts for Teachers (Su) An introduction<br />

to constructing, analyzing, and interpreting tests, types <strong>of</strong> research and <strong>the</strong> research<br />

process, qualitative and quantitative techniques for assessment, and descriptive and inferential<br />

statistics.<br />

CIED5013 Measurement, Research and Statistical Concepts in <strong>the</strong> Schools (Su) An introduction<br />

to constructing, analyzing, and interpreting tests; types <strong>of</strong> research and <strong>the</strong> research<br />

process; qualitative and quantitative techniques for assessment; and descriptive and inferential<br />

statistics. Prerequisite: Admission to graduate school.<br />

CIED5022 Classroom Management Concepts (Fa) A number <strong>of</strong> different classroom management<br />

techniques are studied. It is assumed that a teacher must possess a wide range <strong>of</strong> knowledge<br />

and skills to be an effective classroom manager. Prerequisite: Admission to <strong>the</strong> M.A.T.<br />

program.<br />

CIED5032 Curriculum Design Concepts for Teachers (Sp) The design and adaptation <strong>of</strong><br />

curriculum for students in regular and special classrooms. Theoretical bases and curriculum<br />

models are reviewed. Concurrent clinical experiences in each area <strong>of</strong> emphasis are included.<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to <strong>the</strong> M.A.T. program.<br />

CIED5043 Content Area Reading in Elementary Grades (Su, Fa) This course teaches <strong>the</strong><br />

integration <strong>of</strong> reading and writing in <strong>the</strong> content areas. Reading and writing as integrated strands<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> language process is presented in <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> instructional principles and suggested<br />

teaching practices. A solid research base is emphasized while keeping <strong>the</strong> focus on practical<br />

application. Prerequisite: Admission to <strong>the</strong> M.A.T. program.<br />

CIED5052 Seminar: Multicultural Issues (Su) This seminar provides an introduction to <strong>the</strong><br />

major concepts and issues related to multicultural education. The ways in which race, ethnicity,<br />

class, gender, and exceptionality influence students’ behavior are discussed. Prerequisite:<br />

Admission to <strong>the</strong> M.A.T. program.<br />

CIED5053 Multicultural Issues in Elementary Education (Su) This course provides an introduction<br />

to <strong>the</strong> major concepts and issues related to multicultural education in elementary classrooms.<br />

The ways in which race, class, gender and exceptionality influence students’ behavior<br />

are discussed. Prerequisite: Admission to grad. school.<br />

CIED5062 Literacies Across <strong>the</strong> Curriculum (Sp) This course teaches <strong>the</strong> integration <strong>of</strong> reading,<br />

writing, and new literacies in <strong>the</strong> content areas. Theory and strategy are presented as integrated<br />

strands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> language process as presented in <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> instructional principles and<br />

suggested teaching practices. A solid research base is emphasized while keeping <strong>the</strong> focus on<br />

practical application. Prerequisite: Admission in Secondary M.A.T. Program.<br />

CIED5073 Case Study in Childhood Education (Sp) Provides <strong>the</strong> students with experience<br />

in conducting case studies related to childhood education. In addition, students gain knowledge<br />

regarding practices used in ethnographic research. Prerequisite: Admission to M.A.T. program.<br />

CIED508V Childhood Education Cohort Teaching Internship (Sp, Fa) (1-6) Successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> criminal background check required before beginning teaching internship. May be<br />

repeated for up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> degree credit.<br />

CIED5093 Methods <strong>of</strong> Instruction for Middle Level I (Su) A study <strong>of</strong> methods and materials in<br />

<strong>the</strong> special content areas (math, science, English/language arts, and social studies). The planning<br />

<strong>of</strong> instruction, microteaching, and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> middle school instructional materials<br />

are included. Prerequisite: Admission to M.A.T. program.<br />

CIED5103 Advanced Middle Level Principles (Sp) An in-depth examination <strong>of</strong> recent research<br />

on <strong>the</strong> major issues, practices, and policies for middle level education. Emphasis is on analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> cutting edge issues germane to <strong>the</strong> life, education, and welfare <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early adolescent via<br />

<strong>the</strong> integration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory and practice. Prerequisite: Admission to Masters <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching<br />

program.<br />

CIED5113 Reading in Middle Schools (Sp, Su, Fa) An overview <strong>of</strong> methods and materials<br />

for teaching reading to early adolescents. Reflective activities and site-based field experiences<br />

are integrated with course content to provide continuity between <strong>the</strong>ory and practice. Portfolio<br />

expectations will be a primary means <strong>of</strong> course evaluation. Prerequisite: Admission to <strong>the</strong> middle<br />
