Educational Technologies (ETEC)<br />

ETEC5203 Foundations <strong>of</strong> Educational Technology (Sp, Su, Fa) Provides learners with a<br />

comprehensive survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major trends, issues, people, processes, and products that have<br />

significantly affected <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> educational technology.<br />

ETEC5213 Introduction to Educational Media (Sp, Su, Fa) Instruction in selecting, utilizing<br />

and evaluating instructional materials and equipment. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> standing.<br />

ETEC5243 Instructional Design Theory & Models (Fa) A study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> instructional development<br />

process as it pertains to <strong>the</strong> design and production <strong>of</strong> instructional materials which use<br />

modern technologies. Goal analysis, objectives, evaluation, instructional strategy development,<br />

production <strong>of</strong> an educational product, and revision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> instructional materials are considered.<br />

Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> standing.<br />

ETEC5253 Information Technologies (Irregular) Students perform intensive examinations <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> new technologies and <strong>the</strong>ir implications for instructional practice. Emphasis is on<br />

identification and evaluation <strong>of</strong> new technologies in instructional environments. Establishing and<br />

maintaining learning environments, exploring selected <strong>the</strong>ories and concepts, assessing potential<br />

uses <strong>of</strong> IT, and utilization <strong>of</strong> new technologies will occur.<br />

ETEC5263 Grant Writing in Instructional Technology (Sp, Su, Fa) Students will have an opportunity<br />

to find grant funding sources, write a grant, and submit an actual grant proposal to an<br />

agency for consideration. Will survey research in instructional medial over <strong>the</strong> past 60 years and<br />

learn specific criteria for reading and evaluating research reports and articles. Will investigate<br />

current issues and topics related to research and grant writing in instructional media.<br />

ETEC5283 Field Experiences in Educational Technology (Sp, Su, Fa) Field experience in<br />

educational technology settings. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> standing and 6 hours <strong>of</strong> graduate work<br />

in educational technology.<br />

ETEC5303 Learning with Computers in K-12 Classrooms (Irregular) Students learn how<br />

technology can be used to support K-12 classroom environments. Various learning <strong>the</strong>ories and<br />

technologies will be explored and projects will be developed that utilize technologies and current<br />

learning <strong>the</strong>ories in K-12 settings. Emphasis is on identification, evaluation, and <strong>the</strong> effective use<br />

<strong>of</strong> technologies to support classroom environments. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> standing.<br />

ETEC5313 Principles in Visual Literacy (Irregular) Students gain understanding <strong>of</strong> visual literacy<br />

research and learn to create graphics that support learning. Literature in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> visual<br />

literacy and learning <strong>the</strong>ories as well as tools that facilitate effective visual literacy will be used to<br />

create visuals that are clear, communicate well, and help enhance learner performance.<br />

ETEC5373 Web Design (Irregular) Students design, create, and analyze Web sites by applying<br />

processes, standards and techniques used to identify target audience; ensure compliance with<br />

copyright and disability laws, measure effectiveness, and coordinate Web design. Topics include<br />

copyright and fair use, user and task analysis, usability, accessibility, testing, search engine<br />

optimization, and web analytics. May be repeated for up to 3 hours <strong>of</strong> degree credit.<br />

ETEC5743 Internship (Sp, Su, Fa) A supervised field placement in educational technology<br />

that provides experience consistent with <strong>the</strong> student’s pr<strong>of</strong>essional goals and training emphasis.<br />

Internship experiences are planning and directed under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> a faculty member. Oncampus<br />

and on-site supervision is required. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> standing. May be repeated<br />

for up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> degree credit.<br />

ETEC5981 Eportfolio Production (Sp, Su, Fa) This is a capstone course designed to: 1) review<br />

key constructs presented within <strong>the</strong> Educational Technology curriculum; 2) provide ETEC<br />

students <strong>the</strong> opportunity for reflection relative to his/her learning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key concepts; and 3)<br />

utilize technology to assemble student-created artifacts that demonstrate mastery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key<br />

concepts. Prerequisite: Must be in last semester <strong>of</strong> coursework.<br />

ETEC5993 Seminar (Irregular) This course is designed to enhance <strong>the</strong> established educational<br />

technology curriculum by providing students with special topic content and classroom<br />

experiences under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> a faculty member. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> standing. May be<br />

repeated for up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> degree credit.<br />

ETEC600V Master’s Thesis (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-6)<br />

ETEC6053 Special Problems in Educational Technology (Sp, Su, Fa) Individually designed<br />

and conducted studies <strong>of</strong> educational technology under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> a faculty member.<br />

Negotiated learning contract with supervising faculty required before enrollment. On-campus<br />

supervision required. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> standing. May be repeated for up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong><br />

degree credit.<br />

ETEC6223 Strategic Planning and IDT Programs (Sp, Su, Fa) The course <strong>of</strong>fers readings<br />

and experiences intended to develop strategic planning knowledge, values, attitudes, and skills<br />

in future instructional design and technology leaders. Topics covered include strategic planning<br />

and leadership.<br />

ETEC6243 Advanced Instructional Design (Sp) This course explores advanced topics in<br />

instructional design to facilitate understanding <strong>of</strong> grounded models, advanced <strong>the</strong>ories, and<br />

research. This course focuses on: 1) design and development <strong>of</strong> contextualized technologysupported<br />

learning environments; 2) analysis and application <strong>of</strong> advanced <strong>the</strong>oretical foundations<br />

<strong>of</strong> design; and 3) examination and critique <strong>of</strong> instructional design research. Prerequisite:<br />

ETEC 5243 or equivalent.<br />

ETEC6253 Distance Learning (Irregular) An intensive examination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> telecommunications<br />

and distance education technologies and <strong>the</strong>ir implications for educational practices.<br />

Emphasis is on techniques <strong>of</strong> development, utilization and evaluation <strong>of</strong> telecommunication and<br />

distance education technologies in classroom environments. Prerequisite: ETEC 5213.<br />

ETEC6393 Issues and Trends in Instructional Design and Technology (Irregular) Critical<br />

challenges posed as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> increasing infusion <strong>of</strong> technology into <strong>the</strong> school and training<br />

environments are explored. The course prepares students to make and defend policy decisions<br />

and become conversant with current trends and issues in <strong>the</strong> field. Prerequisite: ETEC 5213.<br />

Requirements for <strong>the</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Education Degree: (Minimum 33<br />

hours.) Candidates for <strong>the</strong> master’s degree in elementary education must complete<br />

a minimum <strong>of</strong> 33 hours <strong>of</strong> graduate course work: 21 hours from courses in<br />

elementary education (ELED) with 15 hours from <strong>the</strong> following areas – English<br />

as a second language (ESL), language arts, ma<strong>the</strong>matics, science, children’s<br />

literature, social studies, early childhood education, reading, special education, or<br />

general elementary education; 3 hours <strong>of</strong> electives; and 9 core hours, including<br />

ESRM 5013 Research Methods in Education and three hours from each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

areas listed below. The required research course (ESRM 5013) is to be taken<br />

during <strong>the</strong> first 12 hours <strong>of</strong> degree coursework and <strong>the</strong> Practicum in Curriculum<br />

and Instruction (CIED 5893) is taken at <strong>the</strong> end. (The major adviser must approve<br />

all courses.)<br />

All candidates who receive <strong>the</strong> master’s degree in elementary education must<br />

pass <strong>the</strong> master’s comprehensive examination which will consist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> defense <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> an action research project. The M.Ed. is designed for experienced<br />

teachers who have <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> expanding pr<strong>of</strong>essional competence. The M.Ed.<br />

program does not meet requirements for state licensure. Students seeking state<br />

licensure should pursue enrollment in <strong>the</strong> M.A.T. program in Childhood Education<br />

(preK – Grade 4) or <strong>the</strong> B.S.E. program in Childhood Education.<br />

Additional Licensure: The University <strong>of</strong> Arkansas <strong>of</strong>fers additional<br />

licensure in Middle-Level Education. This program allows individuals with<br />

an Arkansas teaching license in P-4 or 7-12 to add a teaching license in grades<br />

5 and 6.<br />

Prerequisites to <strong>the</strong> Middle-Level ALP Program: Students will be selected<br />

if <strong>the</strong>y are licensed childhood education or secondary education teachers<br />

who wish to add a teaching license in grades 5 and 6. Students must first be<br />

admitted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> School.<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree program in Middle Level<br />

Education is a 34-semester hour program. The M.A.T. degree is <strong>the</strong> initial<br />

licensure program for students at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Arkansas, Fayetteville. The<br />

program will no longer be accepting students, but will continue to hold classes<br />

until May 2011.<br />

Admission Requirements:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> a B.S.E. in Middle Level Education (Social <strong>Studies</strong>/English,<br />
