Academic Resources and Facilities<br />

MSN, Yahoo!, ICQ, Google, and AIM contacts. Lync provides instant messaging,<br />

including audio and video, for faculty and staff.<br />

• Blackboard Collaborate web-based conferencing allows participants to see<br />

via web cam, hear and ask questions via voice messaging, collaborate by<br />

sharing documents and presentations, discuss in real time, or use a common<br />

whiteboard.<br />

• WordPress <strong>of</strong>fers personal web and blogging space for all UARK users.<br />

• Micros<strong>of</strong>t SharePoint is a web-based application that allows UARK users to<br />

create team web pages, manage projects, share documents and calendars, host<br />

discussion, cre-ate surveys, assign tasks, and control workflow.<br />

• DropboxIT <strong>of</strong>fers a secure online file sharing facility for exchanging large files<br />

on and <strong>of</strong>f campus.<br />

• Listserv mailing lists allow for group email communication and provide webbased<br />

archives.<br />

Students, faculty, and staff have access to information technology resources on<br />

campus through a 10-billion-bits-per-second connection to <strong>the</strong> fiber-optic National<br />

LambdaRail and Internet2 networks. Each year, IT Services upgrades its computer<br />

systems, networks, and information system resources to ensure that all information<br />

technology at <strong>the</strong> university is on par with o<strong>the</strong>r doctoral-granting research universities.<br />

multicultural CENTER<br />

The Multicultural Center is here to welcome students to <strong>the</strong> Razorback family at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Arkansas. The Multicultural Center is a department that enhances <strong>the</strong><br />

student academic experience by preparing <strong>the</strong>m for life in a rich and diverse society. The<br />

Multicultural Center is committed to providing an optimal learning environment that<br />

promotes cross-cultural interaction among all students by collaborating with university<br />

and community constituents to create educational, cultural, and social programs.<br />

The Multicultural Center can be used for educational programming, art displays,<br />

and cultural exhibits. Students are encouraged to take advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mentoring<br />

programs within <strong>the</strong> Multicultural Center and <strong>the</strong> educational and entertainment resources<br />

that include books, video and board games, and study areas. The Multicultural<br />

Center is located on <strong>the</strong> fourth floor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arkansas Union in Room 404. Contact<br />

QUALITY WRITING CENTER<br />

The Quality Writing Center provides face-to-face and online tutorials for undergraduate<br />

and graduate students who want to improve <strong>the</strong>ir writing. Clients make<br />

appointments via <strong>the</strong> center’s web-based scheduling system (http://qwc.uark.edu).<br />

The main facility is in 316 Kimpel Hall, and a satellite center is located on <strong>the</strong> Mullins<br />

Library ground floor.<br />

<strong>Graduate</strong> tutors help clients with any writing project. The center’s staff <strong>of</strong> undergraduate<br />

peer tutors assist students with freshman composition assignments.<br />

Quality Writing Center tutors take a non-directive approach, allowing students<br />

to maintain ownership <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir writing and to control <strong>the</strong> important editorial decisions<br />

that improve <strong>the</strong>ir drafts. The tutors provide assistance to students at any stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

writing process: brainstorming, pre-writing, outlining, drafting, and revising.<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> composition and grammar issues.<br />

Services for international students<br />

and scholars<br />

The <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> International Students and Scholars streng<strong>the</strong>ns <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />

Arkansas as an active member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> international community. The <strong>of</strong>fice provides<br />

pre-arrival assistance and a comprehensive orientation program for newly admitted<br />

international students each semester. Cross Cultural Mentors provide one-on-one<br />

contact and group activities for new international students during <strong>the</strong>ir first semester,<br />

assisting <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong>ir adjustment to <strong>the</strong> academic community and <strong>the</strong> Fayetteville/<br />

Northwest Arkansas area. The <strong>of</strong>fice provides services such as immigration advising,<br />

employment authorization, non-resident tax filing assistance, and o<strong>the</strong>r programs and<br />

services that help students and scholars reach <strong>the</strong>ir academic and personal goals and<br />

make <strong>the</strong>ir time at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Arkansas more productive and enjoyable.<br />

The <strong>of</strong>fice administers outreach programs that give students and scholars opportunities<br />

to learn about U.S. life and culture while enriching <strong>the</strong> community’s<br />

knowledge and appreciation <strong>of</strong> diverse populations and cultures. These are: <strong>the</strong> iFriend<br />

and Global Greeks Programs, which pair international students and scholars with local<br />

families and current UA students who share American culture, daily life, and special<br />

activities with students; <strong>the</strong> Conversation Club program, which provides students<br />

with a small-group setting in which to practice conversational English with native<br />

speakers; <strong>the</strong> International Culture Team, a group whose members speak or share<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r skills and talents through educational presentations throughout <strong>the</strong> community,<br />

representing <strong>the</strong>ir home countries and cultures; and American Field Trip Program,<br />

which takes international students and scholars to local venues to learn about <strong>the</strong><br />

diverse people who call Arkansas home.<br />

The <strong>of</strong>fice sponsors various events including: <strong>the</strong> celebration <strong>of</strong> International<br />

Education Week each fall, and annual seminars for immigration attorneys. A number<br />

<strong>of</strong> registered student organizations specific to various country, culture, or language<br />

groups are linked with <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice including <strong>the</strong> International Students’ Organization<br />

(ISO), a group for U.S. and international students, which organizes events such as <strong>the</strong><br />

International Bazaar and an annual banquet.<br />

student support services<br />

The department <strong>of</strong> Student Support Services is designed to provide a powerful<br />

combination <strong>of</strong> programs and services to students who are first-generation, and/or<br />

modest-income, and/or individuals with disabilities. The services provided by Student<br />

Support Services place an emphasis on individual assessment, counseling, advising,<br />

and skill building. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se services include: academic/financial/personal counseling,<br />

financial scholarships, social etiquette instruction, career and graduate school<br />

preparation, academic/cultural enrichment, assistance with tutoring, and mentorship.<br />

The overarching goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Arkansas Student Support Services program<br />

is to empower students, assist <strong>the</strong>m in achieving academic excellence, and seeing <strong>the</strong>m<br />

through to graduation.<br />

Talent search PROGRAMS<br />

College Project Talent Search, Educational Talent Search,<br />

and University Access Talent Search<br />

College Project, University Access and Educational Talent Search are early-intervention<br />

college preparatory projects. Serving more than 2,000 students in grades 6-12,<br />

<strong>the</strong> programs promote <strong>the</strong> skills and motivation necessary for successfully completing a<br />

baccalaureate degree. They prepare students to meet <strong>the</strong>ir college goals by emphasizing<br />

personal and career development, technological and academic skills, ACT readiness/<br />

payment, college preparatory workshops, financial aid, financial literacy, and support<br />

for completing a rigorous high school curriculum. Academic monitoring and guidance<br />

counseling are incorporated to facilitate student progress. Services are provided<br />

at participating schools on an outreach basis, and summer enrichment and campusbased<br />

events provide ongoing opportunities for institutional and faculty involvement.<br />

The Talent Search programs are under <strong>the</strong> federal umbrella <strong>of</strong> “TRIO” programs<br />

funded by <strong>the</strong> U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Education. Eligibility requirements include but<br />

are not limited to having first-generation/low income status and exhibiting academic<br />
