A geropsychologist is a psychologist who specialises <strong>in</strong> the assessment and management of<br />

older persons. Geropsychologists provide assessment, consultation and <strong>in</strong>tervention services<br />

related to psychological adaptations <strong>in</strong> later life (e.g. adapt<strong>in</strong>g to age-related changes,<br />

bereavement), psychopathology (e.g. affective disorders, dementias), behavioural problems<br />

(e.g. wander<strong>in</strong>g, aggressive behaviour, behavioural aspects of <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence); problems <strong>in</strong><br />

daily liv<strong>in</strong>g (e.g. marital and family problems, cop<strong>in</strong>g with acute and chronic stressors);<br />

medical and legal decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g capacity (e.g. legal guardianship); <strong>in</strong>dependent liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

arrangements; behavioural competencies (e.g. driv<strong>in</strong>g, management of medications, selfcare<br />

skills, f<strong>in</strong>ancial management); and socio-cultural and socioeconomic factors <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the experience and expression of psychological problems. Dist<strong>in</strong>ctive <strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

rem<strong>in</strong>iscence and life review therapies, grief therapy, expressive therapies and psychoeducational<br />

programs <strong>for</strong> family caregivers.<br />

In Australia, no medical services can be provided without the consent of the person<br />

concerned. This consent is considered <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med consent when the person agrees to a<br />

treatment without duress, voluntarily gives their consent after a reasonable time, and has<br />

been provided with adequate <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation. The only exception to this is when the person’s<br />

capacity to consent is impaired by a serious mental illness, <strong>in</strong> which case the relevant State<br />

Mental Health Act can be <strong>in</strong>voked. If a family member has been granted a legal right to<br />

make decisions <strong>for</strong> the resident, then the <strong>for</strong>m stat<strong>in</strong>g this must be sighted by a member of<br />

the aged care team and its powers and limitations noted on the resident’s record. The aged<br />

care team can then be directed by this document as to how much <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation they are able<br />

to share regard<strong>in</strong>g the resident. As the legislation may vary regard<strong>in</strong>g the responsibilities<br />

of people who are authorised ‘<strong>in</strong> advance’ by the resident as ‘Endur<strong>in</strong>g Power of Attorney’<br />

(f<strong>in</strong>ancial or medical) or ‘Endur<strong>in</strong>g Power of Guardianship’, it is <strong>in</strong>cumbent upon each RACF<br />

to check legal requirements.<br />

Medical power of attorney is the title given to a person who is legally appo<strong>in</strong>ted to make<br />

decisions relat<strong>in</strong>g to the medical care of another. Managers of RACFs are directed to seek<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent legal advice regard<strong>in</strong>g medical power of attorney.<br />
