NHMRC APPROVAL<br />
These guidel<strong>in</strong>es were approved by the National Health and Medical Research<br />
Council at its 159th Session on 8 December 2005, under section 14A of the<br />
National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992. Approval <strong>for</strong> the guidel<strong>in</strong>es<br />
by the NHMRC is granted <strong>for</strong> a period not exceed<strong>in</strong>g five years, at which date the<br />
approval expires. The NHMRC expects that all guidel<strong>in</strong>es will be reviewed no less<br />
than once every five years. Readers should check with the Department of Health<br />
and Age<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> any reviews or updates of these guidel<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

This version of the guidel<strong>in</strong>es was approved by the NHMRC on 8 December 2005.<br />
The ma<strong>in</strong> changes to the document s<strong>in</strong>ce the first edition <strong>in</strong> 2004 are the <strong>in</strong>clusion<br />
of the development process (now chapter 1); a significant revision of chapter 6<br />
(physical symptom assessment and management) to ensure the <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation is<br />
stronger than previously, particularly <strong>for</strong> the complementary and alternative<br />
therapies; a revision of the guidel<strong>in</strong>e recommendations to reflect NHMRC’s<br />
requirement <strong>for</strong> process and outcome to be <strong>in</strong>cluded; and a revision of the ma<strong>in</strong><br />
body of the literature review document to ensure that the guidel<strong>in</strong>es and the<br />
literature review are more compatible.<br />
