Kazakhstan’s super-critical <strong>and</strong> sour fluids<br />

dictate the need for special measurements<br />

that require special equipment. These<br />

measurements are only available in Canada,<br />

which serves as the world’s centre of<br />

excellence for work in this area. Having<br />

the ability to carry out work of this kind in<br />

Kazakhstan would provide tremendous<br />

benefits <strong>and</strong> contribute to increased levels of<br />

hydrocarbon recovery.<br />

By adopting such technologies in Kazakhstan,<br />

<strong>and</strong> by the sheer magnitude of its application<br />

in Kazakhstan, the country has the potential to<br />

become a new centre of excellence for fluids<br />

<strong>and</strong> related analysis.<br />

There is another issue in this area connected<br />

to the analysis of solid hydrocarbons (bitumen)<br />

present in abundance in the pore space. To<br />

quantify its source, the latest geochemistry<br />

techniques are needed. Exporting samples<br />

is not feasible in this case, owing to the<br />

need to carry out analyses very quickly after<br />

samples are recovered. Cooperation between<br />

IOCs, ISCs <strong>and</strong> local institutes would help in<br />

establishing research centres for advanced PVT<br />

with sour capabilities <strong>and</strong> geochemistry studies<br />

in Kazakhstan.<br />
