Challenge commentary<br />

This challenge is all about dealing with<br />

the risks to people of operating fields that<br />

produce oil <strong>and</strong> gas with high levels of H 2<br />

The elimination of leaks through better plant<br />

design <strong>and</strong> improved operations is a big<br />

challenge in Kazakhstan. There are benefits<br />

to be gained from reducing the number of<br />

valves, flanges <strong>and</strong> instrument intrusions in<br />

pipe systems. The greater use of seal-less<br />

valves <strong>and</strong> corrosion-resistant materials is to<br />

be encouraged. Risk-based inspection <strong>and</strong><br />

reliability-centred maintenance have a role<br />

to play <strong>and</strong> there is the simple expedient of<br />

separating toxic <strong>and</strong> non-toxic process areas.<br />
