History – Welcomed to <strong>Hilton</strong> <strong>Head</strong> <strong>Island</strong> from 1981 to 2000. Founded in 1981 on <strong>Hilton</strong> <strong>Head</strong> <strong>Island</strong>,<br />
South Carolina by Linda and husband Philip Lader, the former U.S. Ambassador to the Court <strong>of</strong> St. James’s,<br />
Renaissance Weekend was structured to encourage the transcendence <strong>of</strong> political, economic, and<br />
religious differences by bringing together distinguished participants from a wide range <strong>of</strong> fields. About<br />
500 families took part in panels, lectures and discussions designed to get them thinking about more<br />
than their chosen field. The weekend was and still is an invitation-only conclave <strong>of</strong> achievers in fields<br />
like finance, religion, politics, science and sports. Attendees included CEOs, venture capitalists and<br />
entrepreneurs, Nobel Laureates and Pulitzer Prize-winners, artists and scientists, astronauts and<br />
Olympians, judges, diplomats and Presidents (including Bill Clinton), Prime Ministers, pr<strong>of</strong>essors and<br />
priests, Republicans, Democrats and Independents.<br />

History – Family Circle Cup was welcomed to <strong>Hilton</strong> <strong>Head</strong> <strong>Island</strong> for 28 years, from 1973 to 2000. The<br />
event was held in Sea Pines on <strong>Hilton</strong> <strong>Head</strong> <strong>Island</strong> with the exception <strong>of</strong> 1975 & 1976, when it was played<br />
at Amelia <strong>Island</strong>. The Family Circle Cup has a rich history on green clay that dates back to 1973, the year<br />
all <strong>of</strong> women's pr<strong>of</strong>essional tennis was united in becoming the Women’s Tennis Association. This event<br />
is the largest women's-only tournament in the world, and Family Circle magazine is the longest running<br />
title sponsor in men's or women's pro tennis. As the fame and stature <strong>of</strong> Women’s Tennis increased<br />
