The implication is that a small number of offenders don’t appear to have been<br />
deterred by their first experiences of the criminal justice system <strong>and</strong> continue<br />
to commit a large number of fly-<strong>tipping</strong> offences.<br />
In addition to fly-<strong>tipping</strong>, 45% of this sample of 170 fly-tippers had criminal<br />
careers, which included other offences. At Table 5.3 shows, 77 fly-tippers also<br />
had convictions for 1,008 other offences.<br />

Further analysis was carried out to test whether fly-tippers have particular<br />
criminal careers <strong>and</strong> profiles. In relation to prolificacy, there seemed little<br />
relationship between a prolific general crime career <strong>and</strong> degree of<br />
involvement in fly-<strong>tipping</strong>. A Pearson’s correlation was conducted between the<br />
proportion of fly-<strong>tipping</strong> offences in an offender’s criminal history <strong>and</strong> the total<br />
number of offences committed. Results showed a significant negative<br />
correlation (r= -.57, p
