INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR TIBET<br />
Photos of <strong>the</strong> Dalai Lama and o<strong>the</strong>r senior religious leaders at Kirti monastery in Ngaba<br />
county, Ngaba TAP, Sichuan province, were damaged by armed police following a raid on<br />
<strong>the</strong> monastery in early April 2008. Kirti monastery was at <strong>the</strong> center of <strong>the</strong> wave of<br />
protests in eastern <strong>Tibet</strong> when monks were joined by laypeople and schoolchildren in<br />
a major protest on March 16, calling <strong>for</strong> a free <strong>Tibet</strong>, with pictures of <strong>the</strong> Dalai Lama and<br />
<strong>Tibet</strong>an flags on display.<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r protests against <strong>the</strong> aggressive anti-Dalai Lama campaign and imposition of<br />
political campaigns against religion took place in Yulgen (Tsang) in Qinghai and<br />
Nyagchuka in Sichuan on April 15, in Derge (Dzakok) in Sichuan on April 28, and<br />
Markham (Khenpalung) in <strong>the</strong> TAR on May 12, as well as in Nechung monastery in<br />
Lhasa on April 19.<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> most significant protests of this second wave occurred on May 14, when approximately<br />
55 nuns from Pangri nunnery in Su-ngo township, Kardze county in<br />
Kardze TAP, staged a demonstration. According to <strong>Tibet</strong>an sources, <strong>the</strong> Pangri nuns<br />
protested on May 14 because of <strong>the</strong>ir distress and anger at <strong>the</strong> crackdown, detentions<br />
and disappearances that have followed peaceful protests in different areas of <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Tibet</strong>an plateau, as well as resentment against <strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>the</strong> patriotic<br />
31
