INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR TIBET<br />

On March 30 similar operations took place at Taktsang Lhamo, Gomang and Dongri<br />

monasteries. By early April <strong>the</strong> patriotic education campaign was extended to ordinary<br />

people in affected rural areas, who were obliged to denounce <strong>the</strong> uprising and pledge<br />

loyalty to <strong>the</strong> Communist Party. There were eight points to be repeated in front of a<br />

video camera and those who refused to state <strong>the</strong>se were threatened with imprisonment.<br />

The points were as follows:<br />

1. I oppose <strong>the</strong> Dalai clique;<br />

2. I will not keep <strong>the</strong> Dalai’s photo in my house;<br />

3. My thinking is not influenced by <strong>the</strong> Dalai clique;<br />

4. I will not follow splittism;<br />

5. The conspiracy to split nationalities cannot succeed;<br />

6. I love <strong>the</strong> Communist Party;<br />

7. I will follow <strong>the</strong> Party no matter what;<br />

8. I recognise <strong>the</strong> Party’s great kindness.<br />

By <strong>the</strong> end of April many detainees had been released without charge, while hundreds<br />

still in custody were moved to prisons in Dujiangyan and Wenchuan. Their<br />

fate after <strong>the</strong> May 12 earthquake is still unknown. Deaths of prisoners and prison<br />

guards have been <strong>report</strong>ed after <strong>the</strong> major Ngaba prefectural prison — Maowun (Chinese:<br />

Maoxian) in Wenchuan, was partially destroyed in <strong>the</strong> earthquake. 1 The Chinese<br />

press <strong>report</strong>ed that in o<strong>the</strong>r prisons in <strong>the</strong> area, too, prisoners and staff were<br />

killed in <strong>the</strong> earthquake. While it could not be confirmed whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Tibet</strong>ans imprisoned<br />

following <strong>the</strong> recent protests in Ngaba were among <strong>the</strong> victims, <strong>Tibet</strong>an protestors<br />

are understood to have been imprisoned in <strong>the</strong> area, including in detention<br />

facilities at Wenchuan, Maoxian and Dujiangyan.<br />

According to exile monks from <strong>the</strong> region now in India, Nechung, a 38-year old<br />

woman was among those who tore down <strong>the</strong> signboard on a Ngaba police station entrance<br />

on March 16. She was detained two days later, and when she was released on<br />

March 26, she could not speak, or eat without vomiting. Her relatives tried to admit<br />

her to hospital but did not get permission. She died on April 17, and monks were not<br />

allowed to per<strong>for</strong>m death rites <strong>for</strong> her. Her husband has fled to <strong>the</strong> mountains, and she<br />
