19 th Century
wedding festivities
The annual country wedding tells all about the traditions of an Ålandic wedding
celebration in the 19 th century. This from the bridal procession to the
first dance, complete with the beer waiters toting full barrels and toasts to
the happy couple. Dress up in 19 th century finery and join the procession
from Jomala Church to Ulfsby Gård, or be there at Ulfsby to greet them on
arrival. On the farm awaits a wedding market selling local crafts and Ålandic
produce. Round off the day with a wedding dinner in ‘Stensalen’.
bomarsund days
– a glimpse of the past
A visit to the market in Bomarsund takes you back in time to 19 th century
Åland, a time when the area around Bomarsund’s fortress was
Åland’s foremost multicultural centre. Here orthodox Greeks, Protestants,
Catholics, Jews and Muslims all lived and worked together.
Drama and music on the market square bring to life the story of the
rise and fall of the fortress. Bomarsund Days include handicrafts,
refreshments, guided walks, pony rides and other activities for young
and old.
