a museum with
mariners at heart
Go on your own voyage of discovery amongst the model ships, figureheads
and other wonderful artifacts at Åland Maritime Museum. The
summer exhibition is about health and sickness on board. Step in to the
captain’s cabin from the barque Herzogin Cecilie or ponder the sailor’s
fun souvenirs and curio’s in the glass cabinets. Here you find a real pirate
flag. It is said that it is one of the only two remaining in the world.
a rare steel-hulled
4-masted beauty
The Museum Ship Pommern lies at anchor in Mariehamn’s western
harbour. This four-masted vessel is an impressive sight, especially
on the days that the sails are raised. Easy to imagine her
coursing the wheat-route to Australia. The 104 yr old Pommern
is the only freight vessel of her type in the world to be preserved
in her original condition. Today the former cargo holds, house
an exhibition of photographs, objects and films which describe
life on board. Don’t miss the summer exhibition, ‘Göran Schildt
– humanistic photographer’.
