More to a camera
than meets the eye
This summer Åland Photography Museum is showing Nobel Prize
winner and polar explorer, Fritjof Nansen’s camera from his North
Pole expedition of 1893–1896. The museum’s fine collection
includes dark room equipment, and old photographic shop, cameras
and masses of accessories. Everything from antique 19 th century
examples to modern digital cameras.
experience kastelholm
Kastelholm’s heritage sight in Sund makes for a fascinating
outing. There is Kastelholm’s medieval castle with children’s
tours in July and August, the creepy prison museum,
Vita Björn, and Jan Karlsgården Open Air Museum, a typical
ålandic farm from the late 19 th century. Woodwork and
textile activities for children run daily during July, and every
Wednesday there is a display of traditional farm tasks such
as butter churning. When you tire of all this history, turn to
Jan Karlsgårdens Wärdshus for a jolly good meal.
