Global Background
Exchange traded funds (ETFs) provide the performance of a basket of securities and are
listed and traded on a stock exchange just like other stocks. Exchange traded products
(ETPs) have similar characteristics to ETFs, but differ in terms of their structure. These
are passive investment vehicles that provide transparency and flexibility and are
relatively cost efficient.
At the end of 2011, there were 4,221 ETPs and ETFs with assets of US$ 1.525
trillion (+2.82% year-on-year) according to BlackRock. There were 3,011 exchange
traded funds (+6.6% year-on-year) with assets of US$ 1.351 trillion in the world (+3%
year-on-year). There were 193 ETP providers and ETPs were listed on 53 exchanges.
73.5% of global ETF assets were concentrated in the Americas. US accounted for
69.6% of global ETF industry assets. The next largest in terms of ETF assets was
Germany and accounted for 7.7% of the global ETF industry. Top 8 countries
accounted for 97.1% of global ETF assets. Currently, only the United Arab Emirates
and Saudi Arabia have ETFs listed on their exchanges in the GCC region.
