IUP Journalism Department Students interested in a career in the news-editorial or public relations fields, with opportunities in such related areas as magazines, advertising, visual journalism, online journalism, and marketing, should enjoy this innovative, flexible program. The journalism major combines journalism elective courses, the student’s choice of a variety of courses from other university departments, plus internships that provide on-the-job experience. The IUP journalism major is flexible for the individual student, who decides, with an advisor, what directions his or her education will take for a mass communications career. For more information, contact the department at 724- 357-4411, or visit us on the web at www.iup. edu/journalism, or Like Us on Facebook. Students, already proficient in Adobe InDesign from the prerequisite course, work together to produce a magazine in both its print and online version. Assuming various roles such as managing editor, computer storage manager, photography director, art director, web design coordinator, print design coordinator, home page designer, table of contents designers for web and print, audio and video editor, nameplate designer and cover designer, the students learn to work together as a team to produce both magazines on deadline. Previous semesters have used themes such as spring break, college food, writing opportunities and advice for future IUP journalism majors. Some of these publications can be found by going to the department’s home page (www.iup.edu/journalism) and clicking on the Publications link.
