The Coney
The next installment of karaoke
night takes place on Wednesday.
On Wednesday there is a
choice of venues. The Coney, a 642
Philadelphia St. fixture since 1933,
host’s karaoke, so does the Ironwood
Grill 1830 Oakland Ave. The two
locations have distinct atmospheres.
The Coney is a better place to find
the typical college crowd than the
Ironwood. The Coney also offers one
dollar wells, starting at 10 p.m., making
it an affordable place to drink on
Wednesday. Karaoke is not the main
attraction at the Coney. Most people
at the Coney’s downstairs bar, where
karaoke night is held, stay near the
bar and do not sing. When someone
does sing, they are often too many
drinks in to be able to vibrate their
vocal chords coherently.
Ironwood Grill
The Ironwood Grill offers a
break from the usual “let’s
party atmosphere” common in
Indiana bars. Fewer students go to
the Ironwood
Grill than the
other bars in
town, providing
the opportunity
for interaction
with the locals.
Karaoke night
changes things
at the Ironwood
Grill in two
ways. First, there
is a larger crowd
than usual for
a weeknight.
Second, more
students show
up. The real
treat at the Ironwood Grill is finding
people who know how to sing. Every
karaoke night has its stars, but at the
Ironwood Grill they can be found in
higher proportion than in many other
bars. The Ironwood Grill is also a
good place for beginners to go. The
DJ and the crowed are encouraging
and offer advice to anyone just starting
out.
Spaghetti Benders
Spaghetti Benders does karaoke
on Friday night from 10 to close.
Friday is the busiest day of the
week for most bars. Spaghetti Benders
is no exception. Spaghetti Benders
offers an intimate atmosphere, with
the bar holding about 30 people when
a maximum capacity. Most people
come to Spaghetti Benders because
they love the bar, not because of
karaoke. The night is periodically
interspersed with singing, most of
which never rises above pedestrian
mediocraty, or worse. However, when
the right pipes find their way to the
microphone they shine.
