ers have a chance to play. Tennis has no prerequisites to becoming a member. All you have to do is go to the meetings. It is recommended that members have a bit of tennis background to be a member and should always be open to improvement. At the beginning of the semester, members meet to coordinate practice times that work with everyone’s schedules and from then on meetings are arranged and usually take place two to three times a week depending on the weather. Also all members are required to pay the dues which is a mere $5 per semester, a lot cheaper than most clubs. These dues go towards buying balls, hoppers, and anything else needed for the team. Other equipment such as racquets and tennis shoes are not provided and should be brought personally by each member. Other teams that don’t have competitors like the typical sports are the gymnastics club, the swim club, and the martial arts club, and rifle club. Gymnastics club simply sets goals for the girls to work towards and they strive until they achieve them then they set even more challenging goals. “The club is very laidback and fun for each member, we do not push anyone if they feel uncomfortable or scared and our goal is to build up strength and flexibility”, said Melissa Hornick, sophomore nursing major and president of the club from Nazareth, Pa. This is something the members of the club really respect and enjoy along with the low cost of dues which is only $10 per semester. Recently Hornick applied for supplemental money from the finance committee for the clubs on campus and was approved the money so now most of their expenses are paid for. Because of that they no longer have to train in the Memorial Field House on mats. They now travel to TNT Gymnastics Center in Johnston, Pa. twice a week for practices which is mostly where the supplemental money goes towards. The swim club doesn’t compete but just like the tennis team, they are hoping to change that. They recently began working with IUP’s actual swim team to help them train, mainly because their advisor is the coach for the IUP team. Nick Dello Buono, accounting major and a swim club member from West Chester, Pa, said that the club is a relaxing and fun experience with a lot of friendly people. He also said that the coaches are very helpful when it comes to your skills. “We strive to be able to coach any type of swimming ability” said Nick. Meetings are every morning “We strive to be able from 7:45 a.m. – 9:15 to coach any type of a.m. in the Memorial Field House but are never swimming ability” mandatory. Sometimes people have other clubs they are in or they have class. But they suggest attending as many meetings as possible, just to get the full experience of the club. The Martial Arts club is one of the only clubs that has competitions for the members that choose to compete. The competitors not only compete in standup martial arts but also Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which all members are welcome to learn even if they choose not to compete. To become a member, just like every club, members simply pay the dues, $10 per semester, and show up. Coaches prefer that members go to the beginning of the semester to join, but attendance is not required. Simply showing up to a practice is the first step to becoming a member. Practices are every Monday and Wednesday from 7p.m. – 9 p.m. in Zink, gym B. The rifle club is similar to the martial arts club because they compete but don’t have to. Only six members of the club get a chance to travel to other schools to compete. Generally these competitions can last up to seven weeks because competitions are done one day at a time only on the weekends. Transportation to these competitions is usually completely covered by all the members’ dues, which also covers necessary equipment such as guns, targets, and ammo. All new members are properly trained and everyone is required to follow all safety procedures or else membership will be revoked. Just last year the club took 6th place in the nation in the small bore category for National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Clemson. In 2010 they managed to take 2nd place. To become a member of this club just show up to a practice. Practices are at the Pierce Hall shooting range on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. If interested in joining a club sport, simply go to the IUP homepage and search “club sports” in the search bar. Each sports club is presented along with e-mail addresses of the current president and the faculty advisors for each club. Also included on some of the pages are links to actual websites that provide even more information about the club, game times, history of the club and their members. Interested in a sport that isn’t a club? Willing to start a club so that you and others can enjoy it together? All you have to do is go onto the IUP website, type “Student Organizations” in the search bar, click the Student Organizations link and on the right side either click “how to” or “forms” to access the New Student Organization Recognition Packet. This packet tells you everything you need to know about creating a new organization, including a sports club.
