They are Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) students, going to see the comedians, musicians and speakers that are brought to IUP by The Entertainment Network (TEN). TEN has been bringing entertainment to IUP for more than 40 years. According to Zach Clark, director of student activities and assessment, TEN started as the Student Union Board, and in the 90’s became what we know it as today, The Entertainment Network. TEN became a part of the Student Cooperative Association in 2003 and has run that way ever since. The mission statement of the organization as stated on their website is, “The Entertainment Network provides affordable, student-centered, high-quality entertainment of a cultural, recreational, social, and educational nature to the campus community of Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a number of venues, including the Hadley Union Building, Fisher Auditorium, and the Kovalchick Complex.” TEN has two advisers, Sam Barker and Zach Clark. Barker is the main adviser and director of program services while Clark also serves as the director of student activities and assessment. Next in line at TEN is the student executive board, made up of seven IUP students. Every board member has a different role including contemporary entertainment, contemporary music, hospitality, graphics, marketing, technology and advertising chairs. Not only are the members of this board responsible for completing their tasks on time while only going to advisers when needed, they also make many of the decisions about TEN shows. Tasks of the board members include but are not limited to reserving the venue, booking the act, reviewing the contract, creating advertisements, and hanging posters. Executive board positions are paid and, according to Clark, give the students top-notch professional experience. “Being involved in a co-curricular activity, like TEN, makes students more successful,” Clark said. Because much of the responsibility is put on the student executive board, according to Clark, they come out well-prepared for the real world and with more skills and knowledge than before. “Being a part of TEN is a great resume builder,” said Melissa Stranko (senior, Communications Media, Ambridge, Pa.), TEN graphics chair. “It gives me experience outside of the classroom.” There are more ways “Being a part of TEN is a great resume builder.” to be involved with TEN other than being on the executive board; general student participation positions are available as well. As a general member, one can be part of the street team or work at actual events. Responsibilities of the street team members include hanging posters, handing out flyers and simply telling people about the event on the street. Working at events, students could be collecting tickets, distributing wrist bands or monitoring the crowd. Many steps and processes go into a TEN show at IUP. To pick shows, TEN advisers and executive board members look at three factors: market research, a middle agent and student input. According to Clark, executive board members and student participants brainstorm ideas of performers to come to IUP. They use market research, something that contemporary music chair Jon Miller (junior, Communications Media, Butler, Pa.) is in charge of. According to Miller, they look at what is popular, what would work at IUP and what students would like. After ideas are reviewed and approved by Barker and Clark, the booking agency Pretty Polly comes in. According to their website, Pretty Polly is “a full service booking agency and concert production company specializing in college concerts, comedy, weddings, and private events and parties.” It serves as a middle man, and helps work out all of the small details, such as making sure the contract and rules are agreed upon between TEN and the performer. A set schedule is to be followed the weeks prior to the show, and the show is essentially completely taken care of by the student board members. The budget for TEN shows comes from student activity fees and the Student Cooperative Association. Clark stresses that since students’ money 40 Lights! Campus! Action! Spring 2012
is making the shows happen, TEN does it’s best to make the shows enjoyable for the students. “We want to offer affordable, high-quality, studentcentered entertainment,” Clark said. “We want to cater to IUP.” Past shows at IUP have included, among many others, comedian Chelsea Handler, musician Jason Mraz, speaker and sex therapist Sue Johanson, PostSecret founder Frank Warren and music group O.A.R. Shows in spring 2012 include Jo Koy, Chiddy “We want to give as many students as possible a chance to participate.” Bang, Ross the Intern, Texts From Last Night and Young the Giant. Jo Koy is a comedian who started in a coffeehouse in Las Vegas. He now tours colleges and comedy clubs in the United States and internationally. He has appeared on many television shows including “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Last Call with Carson Daly” and “Chelsea Lately.” Koy was at IUP Feb. 14, 2012. Chiddy Bang is an alternative hip-hop group, originating from Philadelphia, Pa. Members include Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege and Noah “Xaphoon Jones” Beresin. Their debut studio album “Breakfast” debuted on Feb. 28, 2012. They visited IUP Feb. 16, 2012. Media personality and comedian, Ross “Ross the Intern” Matthews was at IUP April 10, 2012. Matthews got his start on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” as an intern doing copies, faxes and coffee. The internship went well for Matthews and he is now living his dream of being on television. In addition to appearing on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” he has been on “The View,” “Chelsea Lately” and “Days of our Lives.” Texts From Last Night is sweeping the nation as a form of entertainment online and now in books. Textsfromlastnight.com started in 2009 and is a blog that people send their real-life text messages to. Funny ones are chosen and published on a daily basis. Founders Ben and Lauren were at IUP April 17, 2012. Young the Giant is an alternative rock band from Irvine, Calif. Members include Sameer Gadhia with Comedian Ross Matthews preforms at IUP April 10 lead vocals, Jacob Tilley on guitar, Eric Cannata on guitar, Payam Doostzadeh on bass guitar and Francois Comtois on drums. Their album, “Young the Giant,” was released on Jan. 5, 2011. Their visit to IUP was April 19, 2012. The biggest show TEN has ever brought to IUP, according to Clark, was Wiz Khalifa.
