new, and dues are only $900. This cost covers
team warm-ups, home and away jerseys and
socks, ice time, and referees. The payments
are broken down into four payments which
the members pay throughout the season. The
strain to pay is pretty moderate.
“We are pretty lenient and
understand about getting payments
in” said Allie.
One of the main reasons
why the dues are so much
cheaper than the guy’s team
is because the women only play about eight
games a season. Sometimes they manage to
squeeze in a scrimmage or two, but otherwise
their season is fairly short.
Also as expected, the members have to provide
their own equipment just like the men’s
team does, adding to the expenses of the club.
Unlike the men’s team, consisting of D1 and
D2 teams, the woman’s team partners up with
a local team called the Ice Minks which form
an IUP-B team. The B team consists of girls
that are under the age of 19
that aren’t the most experienced
hockey players. The
main purpose of this team is
to help build up the player’s
skills and heightened their
strengths so that they can be
a part of the IUP-A team the
following season.
These practices aren’t as
time consuming as the guy’s
practices, unless they request
more ice time which
is mostly suggested for the B
team. They practice Monday
nights at 9:50 p.m. as well as
Wednesday mornings at 6
a.m. and since they only have
about eight games per season.
Men’s Rugby is another seasonal sport
mainly played during the fall semester with the
exception of a tournament or two and a few
non-league matches during the spring.
Practices vary from week to week but are
typically four days a week with games on Saturdays.
Games are played in two parts so that
everyone gets the opportunity to play.
Rugby is a very rough and high contact
sport, but players also know how to have good
“Since Rugby is a very physical, rough game, the
experience of crashing into people on the field,
followed by socializing with them after the game,
is pretty unique in the world of sports”
sportsmanship and keep everyone having fun.
At the end of each game both teams get together
to eat, drink, and just have a good time.
“Since Rugby is a very physical, rough game,
the experience of crashing into people on the
field, followed by socializing with them after
the game, is pretty unique in
the world of sports”, said Dr.
Ronald See, chemistry professor
and faculty advisor of the
Rugby club.
Besides the typical sports
that you’d expect to compete such as hockey,
soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and volleyball, not
many other club sports actually compete
against other schools.
Tennis, for instance, according to Ethan Peterson,
political science major and tennis team
vice president and co-founder from Centerville,
Pa., they have been trying to get into tournaments
since the club was formed last year,
but have not yet been able to since the club is
so new. Since they have had some time to get
Ashton Smith searching for an open team member.
their club up and running they hope to participate
in some this semester.
“There are a couple tournaments this spring
that we are hoping to attend, but the amount
of tournaments we go to is completely dependent
on the interest of the members,” said
Peterson.
If they do happen to get a chance to participate
in tournaments, then they expect to
have two girls and two guys per team and from
there rotate teams so that all 30 of their mem
