television program began in 1992 when we
developed a close relationship with Manolo
Romero and the IOC’s Olympic Broadcast
System that continues to benefit our sport
today. That also led to the development of the
ISSF-TV project that brought the 50 th World
Shooting Championships to 600 million viewers
around the world last summer.
The process of making changes in shooting
could be said to have begun after the King of
Sweden’s visit to our Olympic venue in 1984,
but the most important forces for change
have always been people in our sport who
had the vision and foresight to understand
what the shooting sport had to change not
only to keep shooting as an Olympic sport,
but to see it grow as a world sport and adapt
to the modern media and electronic age.
Horst Schreiber was a true leader in seeing
how shooting must change. He clearly saw
the future. He proposed great solutions to
the challenges we face and his arguments
for our causes reflected true genius. He was
persuasive and persistent; it was impossible
to say no to Horst Schreiber.
Throughout his lifetime, Horst Schreiber had
many honors bestowed upon him. He received
the ISSF’s highest award, the Blue Cross, in
1988 at the ISSF General Assembly in Madrid.
His Excellency Juan Antonio Samaranch,
President of the International Olympic Committee
presented this award to him.
The IOC honored Horst with its highest
award, the Olympic Order, in 1992. His Excellency
Juan Antonio Samaranch also presented
this award, during the ISSF Executive
Committee meeting in Barcelona. Of course, I
must not neglect to point out that Horst was
the first person to receive the Presidential
Button, a special distinction that is awarded
to outstanding members of our Federation.
IN MEMORIAM
Horst’s life was defined by
the relationships he developed.
Between 1985 and 2000, we were part
of a strong team within the IOC family that
included Mr. Primo Nebiolo, President of the
International Athletics Federation, where we
dedicated our time to work for the Olympic
Movement, always in close cooperation with
Juan Antonio Samaranch.
In 1988, Mr. Schreiber met Norberto Rivera
Carrera, Cardinal of the Roman Catholic
Church in Mexico. This began a friendship
that would last until the end of his life. His
relationship with his church and his faith
meant a lot to him.
