Foundations of Trauma-Informed Care ► Principles of trauma-informed care see substance use and other behavioral health problems as adaptive responses to trauma. ► The assumption of a trauma history guides every encounter, at every level of care, whether or not clients disclose or even remember trauma. ► Responses and defense mechanisms are reframed as survival strategies that served a safety function and are recognized as evidence of strength. ► The goal is to empower survivors with knowledge and skills so they can take care if themselves, feel a sense of choice, internal control and autonomy.
