Screening—assume a trauma history, but
always screen for current safety.
► Tell them that yes or no answers are fine unless
they wish to say more.
► Give her or him as much control as possible,
including passing on questions, taking breaks etc.
and choosing the setting.
► If the client becomes too upset, redirect by talking
about their strengths, the present day, and ask
them to talk about how they have gotten through.
