ANDRE SMITH
Winner of the 2008 Outland Trophy, Smith brings
the Bengals a rare blend of power and agility … Has
excellent quickness as a pass blocker, and he became
known as one of the most devastating run-blockers in
Southeastern Conference history … Started 38 games
at LOT over three seasons for an elite program, and
entered the draft after his junior campaign … A consensus
All-American last season, he was credited with 18
TD-producing blocks, most in the SEC … Scored a TD
as a freshman, after taking lateral from QB John Parker
Wilson in Independence Bowl vs. Oklahoma State.
COACH PAUL ALEXANDER SAYS: “Andre is a
very powerful man. He can knock ’em back better than
anyone in the draft, and this was a very good year for
offensive linemen.”
OUTLAND TROPHY: Smith is the fi fth Bengal
whose college resume has included the Outland Trophy,
given annually by the Football Writers Association of
America. The award currently goes to the nation’s best
offensive or interior defensive lineman, but in earlier
years defensive ends were also eligible. Other Outland
winners who went on to play for the Bengals are DT
Mike Reid (1969 winner, Penn State), DE Ross Browner
(1976, Notre Dame), C Dave Rimington (1981 and 1982,
Nebraska) and DE Jason Buck (1986, Brigham Young).
All fi ve of the Bengals’ Outland winners were fi rst-round
draft choices by Cincinnati.
COACH MARVIN LEWIS SAYS: “Andre’s
physical ability is no secret, but our coaches really
became sold when they got a chance to talk with him
about football. We watched him light up talking about
protections, where the point was and all those things that
can go unnoticed at times. And when we’d watch game
tapes where he really dominated, he might say, ‘Well,
but last year we lost to them, Coach.’ This guy wants to
be very, very good.”
