Workplace-based training
Supervised clinical work is the essential and major part of training and
education for prevocational trainees.
The most important lessons in clinical practice do not come from instruction, but from observation,
experience, and reflection upon daily activities.
In much on-the-job learning, trainees may not be conscious of the learning taking place because the
focus is on work performance. It is one of the roles of supervisors and directors of training to ensure
that trainees realise the professional development potential of their daily experiences.
On-the-job learning is extended and reinforced by:
• z self-directed learning
• z e-learning
• z simulation and workshops
• z the network lecture series
• z term-specific teaching.
z • Each of these elements of the learning model are described in more detail over the next few
pages.
