Enhancing the employability <strong>of</strong> our students<br />
Year 1<br />
You will study the following modules:<br />
Developing Business Skills – encourages the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> key management skills that will<br />
form a basis for a future career in business and<br />
management. The module includes the following<br />
themes: management skills and managerial<br />
effectiveness; self awareness; working in teams;<br />
management projects; written communication and<br />
email; managing meetings; oral presentation skills;<br />
and interpersonal skills.<br />
Economics for Business – introduces you to<br />
issues <strong>of</strong> central concern in business economics<br />
and introduces the economic environment in<br />
which businesses operate. The module includes<br />
the following themes: responsiveness <strong>of</strong> demand;<br />
the concept <strong>of</strong> cost; the supply curve; markets<br />
in action; market structure and competition<br />
growth; the labour market; GDP, inflation,<br />
fiscal and monetary policy; unemployment and<br />
global economics.<br />
Foreign language component – in addition to<br />
these academic modules, direct entrants into year<br />
1 will undertake an introductory language learning<br />
component. First-hand experience <strong>of</strong> learning a<br />
new foreign language in an international business<br />
environment will help students to develop linguistic<br />
and cultural sensitivity.<br />
The language options available may vary<br />
each year. In 2012 we expect to be able to <strong>of</strong>fer<br />
Mandarin and Arabic.<br />
Information Systems and Business Research<br />
– will introduce you to business applications used<br />
to inform and communicate, to the use <strong>of</strong><br />
Micros<strong>of</strong>t Excel, and to elementary statistical<br />
methods used in business and business research.<br />
Introduction to Business – provides you with a<br />
basic understanding <strong>of</strong> business and management.<br />
The module pursues themes such as models <strong>of</strong><br />
management, the business environment, managing<br />
people and leadership.<br />
Introduction to Financial and Management<br />
Accounting – provides you with a firm foundation<br />
in the theory and practice <strong>of</strong> accounting. The<br />
module assumes no previous studies <strong>of</strong> accounting<br />
and pursues the following themes: the balance<br />
sheet; the pr<strong>of</strong>it and loss account; the double entry<br />
system; adjustments <strong>of</strong> accounting; accounts <strong>of</strong><br />
limited companies; costing; budgeting; and<br />
variance analysis.<br />
Introduction to Organisational Behaviour –<br />
builds up your appreciation <strong>of</strong> the nature and<br />
historical development <strong>of</strong> organisational behaviour.<br />
The module introduces key concepts, theories and<br />
methodologies in organisation studies, and<br />
develops an understanding <strong>of</strong> the linkages<br />
between research, theory and practice.<br />
