Preparing you for university study in the UK<br />

Course description<br />

This 20 hour per week course is suitable for you<br />

if you are academically qualified, hold an <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

from <strong>UEA</strong> <strong>London</strong>, and need to improve your<br />

English language level before starting your<br />

undergraduate or postgraduate degree at <strong>UEA</strong><br />

<strong>London</strong>. The Pre-sessional course concentrates<br />

on academic English and preparing you for<br />

university study in the UK.<br />

The Pre-sessional course runs from late June<br />

to early September. Depending on your current<br />

language level and degree programme<br />

requirements, you will be required to take either a<br />

12-week course starting at the end <strong>of</strong> June, an<br />

8-week course starting in July, or a 4-week<br />

course starting in August.<br />

Course aims<br />

The Pre-sessional course is designed to:<br />

• provide a high quality Academic English course,<br />

which prepares international students for<br />

academic study at <strong>UEA</strong> <strong>London</strong><br />

• improve your English language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in<br />

the core skills <strong>of</strong> listening, speaking, reading<br />

and writing<br />

• develop academic study skills for university<br />

study, including giving presentations, taking<br />

notes from lectures, taking part in seminar<br />

discussions, and writing assignments based on<br />

relevant sources<br />

• focus on subject-related work in your chosen<br />

area <strong>of</strong> study<br />

• help you to study independently using extensive<br />

online and self-access material<br />

• provide you with a short period <strong>of</strong> time to adapt<br />

to living and studying in the UK.<br />

Assessment<br />

You will be internally assessed to evaluate whether<br />

you have reached the appropriate level for your<br />

degree course. Methods <strong>of</strong> assessment will<br />

include short written texts, extended essays,<br />

listening tests, oral presentations and language<br />

tests. Exams take place at the end <strong>of</strong> the course.<br />

Acceptance on a <strong>UEA</strong> <strong>London</strong> course is at the<br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Course outcomes<br />

Assuming you have already met the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

academic entry requirements and any other<br />

outstanding conditions, achieving the level <strong>of</strong><br />

performance required in the Pre-sessional English<br />

course to fulfil the conditions <strong>of</strong> your <strong>of</strong>fer will allow<br />

you to progress to your <strong>University</strong> course, without<br />

needing to retake the IELTS or TOEFL test.<br />

Academic entry requirement<br />

Applicants must hold an <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> a place on a degree<br />

programme at <strong>UEA</strong> <strong>London</strong>.<br />

English language entry requirement<br />

Only an <strong>of</strong>ficial IELTS or TOEFL result will be accepted<br />

as pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> English language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency.<br />

For degree courses that require IELTS 6.5<br />

(with a minimum <strong>of</strong> 6.0 in each subskill)<br />

12 weeks: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum <strong>of</strong> 5.0 in<br />

each subskill) or equivalent<br />

8 weeks: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum <strong>of</strong> 5.5<br />

in each subskill) or equivalent<br />

4 weeks: Applicants must have achieved the minimum<br />

IELTS level required by the relevant School <strong>of</strong> Study,<br />

and been accepted onto the course<br />

the English language level required for direct entry.<br />

Tuition fees do not include:<br />

• text books and other learning materials: an<br />

additional charge in the region <strong>of</strong> £30 for the<br />

12 week course, £25 for the 6 week course<br />

and £20 for the 4 week course<br />
