Module descriptions<br />

English Language and Study Skills<br />

This module introduces and develops your skills in<br />

academic reading, writing, listening and speaking.<br />

It deals with the structure <strong>of</strong> academic writing<br />

through the study <strong>of</strong> academic texts related to<br />

your field <strong>of</strong> study. By doing practical tasks, you<br />

will develop the skills to read and interpret<br />

academic texts, and write academic assignments.<br />

You will also learn about academic conventions<br />

such as referencing, and other issues related to<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> English for academic study.<br />

Additionally, you will develop your listening skills<br />

through practical exercises, and extensive group<br />

work will help you gain the confidence and skills to<br />

participate in seminar discussions and give<br />

presentations. The module gives you practice in<br />

using the specialist vocabulary you need to follow<br />

your pathway lectures, read text books and<br />

participate in seminars.<br />

Foundation Mathematics<br />

This module covers basic mathematical concepts<br />

including algebra, solution <strong>of</strong> quadratic equations,<br />

coordinate geometry, trigonometry, differential and<br />

integral calculus, basic techniques <strong>of</strong> statistics<br />

and ideas <strong>of</strong> probability.<br />

Introduction to the Study <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

This module provides a basic understanding <strong>of</strong><br />

business and management for students planning to<br />

take a related undergraduate degree. The module<br />

includes the following themes: the business<br />

environment; managing people; leadership; human<br />

resource management; corporate strategy;<br />

marketing; and organisational structure.<br />

Introduction to the Study <strong>of</strong><br />

Accounting<br />

This introductory module covers financial and<br />

management accounting, including social and<br />

environmental accounting. It demonstrates some<br />

<strong>of</strong> the basic accounting concepts and procedures<br />

used in the preparation <strong>of</strong> financial statements and<br />

helps you understand financial performance.<br />

Economics<br />

The main aims <strong>of</strong> this unit are to introduce<br />

students to thinking like an economist and to<br />

become familiar with key terminology used in<br />

economics. It provides an introduction to the main<br />

theoretical models and concepts used in<br />

economics with an emphasis on the application <strong>of</strong><br />

economic theory to real-world applications.<br />

International and<br />

Development Studies<br />

This module provides a grounding in the field<br />

<strong>of</strong> international relations and international<br />

development. It introduces theoretical perspectives<br />

and looks at recent history and current trends in<br />

world development. It also covers the evolving<br />

structure and role <strong>of</strong> international institutions such<br />

as the United Nations. You will study key issues<br />

relating to international development, including<br />

case studies <strong>of</strong> countries such as India and China.<br />

Law<br />

The main principles and structure <strong>of</strong> English law are<br />

introduced in this module. In order to understand<br />

the background <strong>of</strong> the legal system you will study<br />

the principles <strong>of</strong> the constitution and various<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> law. The module covers EU law as well<br />

as the European Convention on Human Rights.<br />

Society and Culture<br />

This module introduces the fundamental<br />

concepts <strong>of</strong> society, socialisation and culture.<br />

Topics covered include race and ethnicity, gender<br />

and sexuality, religion, and the mass media. You<br />

will examine contemporary culture, issues related<br />

to consumption, popular culture and the influence<br />

<strong>of</strong> globalisation.<br />

Course format varies from lecture to group work,<br />

making use <strong>of</strong> the latest in classroom technology<br />
