Dr Stephen Barclay MA MB BCh MSc FRCGP MD<br />

Honorary Senior Lecturer<br />

Stephen joined the Department as an Honorary Senior<br />

Research Associate in 2002, becoming Honorary Senior<br />

Lecturer in Primary Palliative Care in the Department in<br />

2006. He works as a General Practitioner in Cambridge,<br />

where he is also Honorary Consultant Physician in<br />

Palliative Medicine at the Cambridge Hospice, Specialty<br />

Director for Palliative Care teaching in the Clinical School<br />

and Macmillan Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the<br />

University General Practice and Primary Care Research<br />

Unit. His research focuses on Palliative Care in the<br />

Primary Care setting, and he has collaborated with Cathy<br />

Shipman and Julia Addington-Hall over several years.<br />

He was awarded the University of Cambridge Ralph<br />

Noble prize for his MD thesis entitled "General Practitioner<br />

provision of Palliative Care in the United Kingdom"<br />

in 2005 and in 2006 was granted a Department of Health<br />

/ Macmillan Post-Doctoral Fellowship, which is to be at<br />

the Kings Department part of the time.<br />

Dr Claudia Bausewein MD MSc<br />

<strong>Cicely</strong> <strong>Saunders</strong> International Research Training Fellow<br />

Claudia went to Medical School at the University of<br />

Munich. She completed her MD on the situation of<br />

terminally ill cancer patients on admission to hospital.<br />

Although her background is internal medicine, she has<br />

been involved in Palliative Care in Germany for 15 years.<br />

She is now working as a consultant in palliative medicine<br />

at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Palliative Medicine at<br />

the University of Munich. Claudia is Vice-President of<br />

the German Association for Palliative Medicine and coeditor<br />

of the German Journal for Palliative Medicine.<br />

Claudia completed the MSc in Palliative Care at KCL in<br />

2003. Her research project focussed on the validation of<br />

the German version of the Palliative Care Outcome<br />

Scale. Through the MSc Claudia developed her interest<br />

in research and undertook more training in research<br />

methods. She is currently undertaking a PhD funded by<br />

<strong>Cicely</strong> <strong>Saunders</strong> International focusing on breathlessness,<br />

looking particularly into the course of breathlessness<br />

in patients with COPD or cancer and their relatives.<br />

Within her PhD Claudia conducted a systematic review<br />

on measurement of breathlessness and is currently<br />

undertaking a Cochrane Review on non-pharmacological<br />

interventions in breathlessness in advanced disease.<br />

Besides breathlessness her main research and clinical<br />

interests are palliative medicine for non-oncological<br />

patients, pharmacotherapy and subcutaneous<br />

application of drugs.<br />
