Dr Sue Hall BSc PhD CPsychol<br />
The Dunhill Lecturer in Palliative Care<br />
Sue studied Psychology at the Polytechnic of East<br />
<strong>London</strong> and received a PhD in Health Psychology at<br />
King’s <strong>College</strong> <strong>London</strong>. Her first academic appointment<br />
was on a study exploring quality of life for patients with<br />
brain tumours. For most of the next 11 years, she<br />
worked with the Psychology & Genetics Research<br />
Group, King’s <strong>College</strong> <strong>London</strong>, running national and<br />
international studies focusing on adjustment to serious<br />
negative life events, behaviour change, and facilitating<br />
informed choice. During this time she spent a year at the<br />
Centre for Health Care Research, at the University of<br />
Brighton as Research Fellow and NHS R&D Consultant.<br />
In March 2006, she joined the Department of Palliative<br />
Care, Policy and Rehabilitation as Lecturer in Palliative<br />
Care. She is currently developing a programme of work<br />
to improve palliative care for older people. This includes<br />
producing a new booklet for the World Health Organisation<br />
Solid Facts Series on better palliative care for older<br />
people, understanding the barriers and facilitators of<br />
implementing the Gold Standards Framework for Care<br />
Homes, exploring views of dignity of older people in care<br />
homes, and evaluating dignity therapy for older people<br />
in care homes.<br />
Dr Richard Harding BSc MSc DipSW PhD<br />
Senior Lecturer in Palliative Care<br />
Richard originally read Social Anthropology and<br />
conducted field work in the Netherlands before taking a<br />
Masters and Diploma in Social Work at the <strong>London</strong><br />
School of Economics. He undertook his Doctoral studies<br />
in the Department of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation<br />
at <strong>King's</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>London</strong>, developing and testing an<br />
intervention for informal carers. He has worked in<br />
diverse care settings as care provider, care manager,<br />
and social worker and in voluntary sector settings in<br />
group work and training. His interests are primarily<br />
in non-cancer (HIV, heart failure) and in developing an<br />
evidence base for palliative care in Sub-Saharan Africa<br />
where he collaborates in a number of exciting,<br />
productive and enjoyable partnerships with palliative<br />
care and academic settings.<br />
